Help with a MAME driving cab
« on: January 03, 2009, 07:07:30 am »
Hi Guys,
I've just got back into tinkering again over the Christmas period (see my other recent post) and was wondering what 'driving cab friendly' front ends were available? The cab is an old S.C.I. machine with wheel (obviously!), single pedal, shift, 'turbo' button and wheel 'firing' button. There is also a single start button. Inside I have an IPAC and OPTIPAC. I'm aware the IPAC uses shortcuts for certain functions (insert coins etc) are these 'mapable' to other buttons because I don't want to have to add extra buttons if I can help it.

Are you going to only run mame, or are you going to do other emus or games?  The reason I ask is mame can be remapped instead of the ipac.

ipac:
Shift key: one fixed button + any other button sends a different signal tha either pressed alone.  Works with mame and other apps.  Remap with ultimarc's tool.

mame:
Any multiple key combo, including two, three or up to 16 key pressed at same time combo.  Only works in mame.  Whatever the key pressed normally due still happens (unless mapped with NOTs, but only if the not key was pressed first).  Remap in mame's in game tab "Input (general)", or use ctrlr file, which is easiest edited through the same "Input (general)".  Mame FAQ

Hi,
Thanks for the advice.
Will just be running MAME in the cab so just need to find a FE that will allow selection by using the steering wheel and button(s).

I'm not sure what the specs of your machine is that you will be using, but HyperSpin allows selection via a Spinner.  I am pretty sure that a steering wheel would act like a spinner.

Daywane,
Good idea with the pedals, unfortunately there is only a single pedal for accelleration :(

Dazz,
Thanks for the HyperSpin tip, I'll have a go with that and see if it is suitable.
