saw this preview for this Wii game.

I never thought I would see a game like this on a nintendo system.

You may not - it's got to get past the ratings board first right?

What the hell kind of game is that?  Is it like the RE series? If so, maybe....but if there's no decent storyline, I can't see that flying on ANY game system.  The violence in it seemed pointless (but I did have my volume on the PC down, so I don't know what was said behind it).

I've been looking forward to this game for a while, especially since the team behind this game contains many of the same people who made Okami, which was a great game.  The amount of stylized violence reminds me of No More Heroes which wasn't quite as graphic, but had far more blood gushing out when you cut off limbs, so I don't think it will have a problem getting an M rating.

ditto. some of the guys from that design team did resident evil as well. so lots of experience behind them. when it comes out it might be the impetus i need to buy a wii. except with our prudish government, i guess ill have to import it...

Before I discuss MadWorld, I'd like to tell you about the developer. PlatinumGames is a very new company founded by  Shinji Mikami, Atsushi Inaba and Hideki Kamiya, all once key members of Clover Studios (Viewtiful Joe, God Hand, Okami) before it was closed down by Capcom in 2006. Mikami is famous for creating Resident Evil, Kamiya directed both Viewtiful Joe and Devil May Cry, and Inaba was a driving creative force behind Viewtiful Joe, Okami, and God Hand. As you can see, these three together hold to their names some of Capcom's most critically acclaimed titles and series.

MadWorld is a brutal action game that puts you in a game show that forces you to kill as many people in the most entertaining ways possible. You control Jack, and must destroy opponents by any means necessary, especially if they're gory methods. The designers have stated that their intent was to make the violence so excessive that it was actually funny, and their word can be seen in previews and videos, as can the previewer's glowing words about it's design and gameplay. The game has been lauded for it's use of Sin City-esque art style and it's gruesome humor. For example, players can impale enemies with a Caution sign. Further humor is brought in through the game show's announcers, who are voiced by John Dimaggio (Bender from Futurama) and Greg Proops (Whose Line is it Anyway?)

MadWorld brings to the table unique art style, hilariously excessive violence, skilled comedic voice acting, solid gameplay, and one of the most brilliant design teams of the last decade.

First off, thanks to Chris for explaning the story behind the game a bit.

I don't mean to come off as a prude here, because I just got RE4: Wii Edition, and I love that thing so far. The graphics and the high level of story telling keep me pushing on.

That said, I just can't see the need for a game like this....but, it's a free country. To each his own Wiimotes, I suppose.   :D

I was really looking forward to it when all I knew about it was the studio making it and the cool art style used to hide the Wii's weaknesses.  That preview doesn't make it look very fun at all, though.  And the announcers look like they are probably deal breakers.  The lines are not funny at all.  They're just annoying.  Hopefully the game will be more than just gratuitous violence.  We all know that it's loads of fun to just rampage through GTA committing random acts of violence -- for about an hour.  If the violence is the point of the game, it will be lame.  And if the announcers cannot be turned off, it will be lame.

Also, it's being published by Sega, which actually gives me pause.

I got to play/see MadWorld at comic con and I have to say it was pretty damn fun.  Now granted, I only played it for 5 minutes or so, so I can't speak to the longevity of the fun factor, but I really liked it.  It was very stylized, the art was awesome, and some of the kill animations really are hilarious in their absurdity.  I'll be keeping an eye on it for sure.

Totally off topic -- Ghostbusters looks AWESOME!!!!

Reminds me of a game already out for the Wii - No More Heroes

Just with a comic book theme and a bit more violent.

So, anyone pick up a copy the game?  Reviews seem to be pretty good, so I'll probably pick up a copy in the next week.

So, we're looking at Manhunt with Madden's announcers?  Oh that sounds fun.

When it's created by the same people responsible for Okami, Viewtiful Joe, and Resident Evil, and currently at 83 on metacritic, then it's definately worth taking a closer look at the game to see if it is fun.

Yeah, I got it. Unfortunately, I haven't even had a chance to touch it yet since I found out my Wii GPU is shot. :(

Overall its good.   It's not perfect though.  A little repetitive at times especially during point accumulation levels.

I got it a few days ago, only got about 30 min into it as I have no time on my hands.

Interesting beat em up game.  its like streets of rage on crack.  It definitely has raw appeal due to the comic book theme and insane violence but once you cast away that its a pretty mediocre game.

buy/rent?

depends on the person, anybody could have fun with this one as a rental but owning it I feel its going to be a dust collector after you beat it one or two times.  though its definitely one you want to show your friends when they come over.

best wii games I got recently:

De Blob
Boom Blox
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core
Tatsunoco vs Capcom
Naruto Ninja Taisen Shippuden EX3

best all time games for wii

Mario Galaxy
Mario Kart Wii
Super Smash Bros Brawl
Zelda Twilight Princess
Okami

just a short list, I could make them a bit longer.

you know what it is?  I think this game would be a score better if it was a co-op beat em up, instead of a single player experience.

Worlds better.

I haven't gotten very far into it yet but so far im enjoying it.  I really love the graphical style, and the comic violence. In fact, it's kinda like an interactive version of Lobo! Some people had reservations about the commentators, but i'm really enjoying their R-rated banter. Bear in mind though that my perspective is that of someone who has never owned a console made this century, and that i'm still working through super mario world on the N64.

I think the two player bloodbath challenges could be good. Hoagie, you never know they might make it co-op if they make a sequel...

If the video above is representative of the commentary in general, I will have a difficult time enjoying the game unless it can be turned off.  Can the commentary be turned off?

yes, in options you can turn down (or off) :

music

sfx + game voice

cut scene voice

announcers

and subtitles on or off

I'm still enjoying the commentary even though it gets a bit repetitive if you are doing the same stage again. But then i get a kick out of hearing John Dimaggio. I can't help but picture Bender with a cigar in his mouth when he's talking...
