Do you SIP or DIP ?

In the past couple of days, I've been:

• unable to source a particular DIP socket locally
• rereading Clay's repair guides while I work on my F2K

In the past, I've used dual wipe DIP sockets whenever I put in a socket, but Clay favours SIP sockets.

What do you prefer ?

Ideally I would use SIP more often since doing once side at a time is easier for my novice soldering skills. However, I use dual wipe just because it's what I have laying around.

If you ever break a pin off in that sip socket be warned that they can be a real beeyotch to replace. They have a big shoulder on top of that skinny pin and it can be tricky to get it fully desoldered.

If you don't get it fully desoldered then you run a big risk of ripping the top trace up.

Why not cut up DIP's to be usable as SIP's? They connect better to the flat flaps of the IC's than the SIP round holes.

I'll use SIP if I have them on hand but if I don't I have no issues with a good quality DIP.  That option isn't in the poll so I didn't vote.  Maybe the best part of SIPs is that you can just order really long ones and trim them to whatever size you want.  You don't have to keep 10 different sizes in stock.

I was encouraged to use SIP when I started doing board work for my pinball. I really liked them. From a desoldering standpoint, a SIP would be much easier to remove than a DIP.

DIP's, but the machined one's not the wipe.

Apart from Chad's argument (which is a good one) I don't see any readon to use SIPs instead.
