Q*Bert HS Corruption
« on: December 05, 2008, 10:24:59 am »
I've read a number of instances where real Q*Berts lost their high score data and I thought it was a hardware issue.  Perhaps not?  For the 3rd time in 6 months my MAME Q*Bert lost high score info for absolutely no reason what so ever.  I didn't change mame versions....I didn't delete anything.....nothing.  Q*Bert is the only game I've found affected thus far.  The first time I thought it was a fluke.  The second time I figured I may have updated MAME causing the problem or something...not this time.   No way.  I put up a HS of about 60K and the next day I played...only got 25K and was #1....all scores gone.

Um....I've encountered this too and there's no predicting it. Although, I only recall it happening in Advancemame, which is what I mostly use. What version of mame are you using?  Off the top of my head, I'm thinking there's some kind of nvram dumping or something, because I've found the .hi files still in the folder after the score regression.

I'm new here so this may not be helpful but would like to try and help anyway. :)
Does this happen when you completely shut down the machine and turn it back on?
If it does, (my best guess) it could be that since there are no physical roms or H.S. memory circuitry, everything is stored in the computer memory and is wiped out when the computer shuts down.

Hope this helps,

Shawn
