unofficial mame version?
« on: June 19, 2003, 12:43:38 am »
ok, I know I shall catch a lot of heat for this... but i must ask...
I won't say I have these roms or own the boards, since I don't
BUT...
say I wanted to run Kof2002 and metal slug 4 in mame...
and I DID have the roms...
where would I get the unofficial build from?

Compile it yourself, take a look at www.mame.net full instructions on how to do this.

You are not allowed to release versions of mame that have test games or restricted games turned on.  Its in the licensing.

But building your own is VERY easy... much easier then it used to be.  They have a single file to download that has the compiler and all the files needed...

then you download the source and put it in the same directory..

then you set your path (note.... do full path!  needed!  This one got me for a bit)

type make...

Are all the files you talk about downloadable from www.mame.net ?.

This is actaully documented.  Maybe not step by step, but it isn't difficult once you figure it out.  I did a google search for "mame mslug4 compile" and the first link gave clues :)

You're pretty slow on the uptake, there buddy...

The posts above were letting you know that it's ok for you to re-compile it yourself (with those drivers enabled), but not to redistribute it...

I can hear your argument coming... but before you start about "awww cmon it's no different than the 3000 roms you don't have boards for..." I think you should take a look into misfit mame which IIRC has what you seek (or maybe it doesn't, I never actually used it)

Well, to compile mame is super easy, follow the instructions.

Though the instructions aren't completely up to date.  The only thing they are missing is the extra libraries (available in the downloads of mame.net) from mame upgrading to dx7.  But that's easy, just follow the instuctions for setting up mame compile, once you get the setup, grab the new libraries and unzip them into the mingw folder.

Sure you don't mean "Can't be bothered to read all those instructions...I'm sure someone else has put the effort in and I can just get a copy?" ;)

Sorry couldn't resist  :)

I'm sure lots of people do have it.  But, it's against the licensing to redistribute.

very true...
it is...
but what people don't know can't hurt anyone...
lol...
i do see why this rule is in effect tho, so i won't argue about that, because I understand...

I can't get the compiler to work...I have it all and it seems to be nothing like the wolf 3d borland compiler i'm used to...

thanks for the info rampy... and no I'm not going to argue against it, because I don't want mame to get attacked by a bunch of companies when i play all arcade games even mame ones just as much as i do at home...but arcade manufacturers don't/won't see it that way... so yea, i agree i'm not arguing with the terms, they didn't even have to distribute mame at all, so we're lucky to have what we do...

I have to agree with the crew - it's MEGA easy to compile you own (roll your own if you will...) ;)

Take the time to learn how, it will allow you to tweak the source to get it to do what you want. (ie: add extra drivers, remove OK screens, add features, etc.)

I don't know how to code, but by studying it and experimenting, I've been able to add stuff and also make changes...

The golden rule is that you cannot redistribute a compiled version with unsupported games. The sole reason being to protect the main version of MAME. You can't afford to tick off a company and have them go after the MAME project. We would all have to hunt you down and "kill" you... ;D

(Are a few lousy games worth the whole project?)

That's all. I'm hammered and just typing words...

The thing that sucks is that the instrucitons are out of date on the mame site...

Go to the MAME32 site and read THEIR instructions.

You download 4 things...you install them one after the other.
You open up Drivers.c
you uncomment a few lines that are plainly obvious...
you set a PATH to the place you installed the compiler
you run what they tell you to run ont he MAME32 page
you are done.  new executable created.

Just remember to download all 4 applications...you'll need the windows source version of mame, minGW, and three other files.

Plus, you'll be learnin somethin....

MameDev doesn't want to tread too much on arcade manufactures' toes, so there is an unofficial "two year" rule: the game needs to be released for at least more than one* year and the manufacturer can't still be making $$$$$ on it.

Metal slug 4 is not old enough and is still making bank, so it's not officially in mame.  Golden Tee is still raking in the money, so it's not officially in mame.  *shrug*  CYO (Compile Your Own)

*Two is "more than one", thus the name, including quotes, "two year" rule

Some games are listed as testdrivers (not enabled) but are contained in the source already. ie: you don't have to reinvent the wheel... You can always enable them to see how they run. Some are disabled due to having some problems such as being non-playable, etc. But they can be fun to play around with. ;)

Look to the driver.c file, my friend. It'll all make sense when you look at it.

Prior to tweaking / adding source, just try compiling it as is, then go in, make your changes, then re-compile.

Word. ;D

Yeah, make sure you can compile mame as-is first.  Incase something goes wrong it isn't because you mucked with the source:)

Just keep trying things.  The worst way to learn how to do things is to be afraid that you'll screw something up.  If you don't know exactly how something is done just learn by trial and error.  That's how I learned computers.  I've only screwed up one or two to the point that I could no longer boot up and had to reinstall the OS.

Anyway, don't be afraid to type whatever you want at the command line.  If you type the wrong thing there is a 99% chance that nothing will happen and only a 1% chance that your computer will explode.  And who knows...maybe you'll find that you typed the right thing instead.

Edit:  LOL, if your computer explodes your avatar picture will be an accurate representation of you in real life!!!
