Tetris Party - WiiWare offers up another goodie!
« on: October 26, 2008, 10:29:50 am »
I'll admit you have to be careful what you purchase, which is why I think the Nintendo Channel for the Wii has become a great addition. You get to see how crappy Wii Music is before you rush off to the store!

In comparison, however, you also get to see what fun and beauty is also out there; case in point would be Tetris Party.  Ok, yeah, maybe there's NOT a lot of difference in it and Dr. Mario online.  Tetris Party, however, will surprise you with its varied game play styles (including Wii Balance Board, which is what got me curious / sold me), and it's ability to host online tournaments at some point in the future.

The balance board game is fun and more than a challenge for someone old as myself. If there is any disappointment I have with it it's that the T-shape pieces are not included, but I suppose they couldn't figure out / didn't take the time to figure out what balance board movements would be needed to place those - either that, or the moves were too difficult.

I'm a puzzle game fanatic, so don't take my review too seriously, but I am more than impressed. Only cost me the equivalent of $12 too (1200 Wii Points). It's a nice offering for such a cheap price. When I can afford it, I hope to try out Amazing Maze by Digital Leisure (yet another balance board game) as well.

EDIT: A quick addendum - the other night the wife and I were playing the balance board version and the T-shaped pieces do actually appear.  It's the playing area that is shrunk a bit.  My apologies!

Check out World of Goo.  It's the best game on Wii-Ware by far.  And it's a puzzle game.  You'll be in heaven.

Thanks shmokes. I tried it out this morning first on the PC (demo) then went and bought a new Wii Points card to download the full version there.

Point blank, you're right - I love it, and am in 7th heaven.  I'm currently at "Impale Spikey" and just missed clearing  it while ago.  But god, I am so addicted to it, it's sad. I could hardly wait to get home from work to pick it up again!

Don't mention it.  Funny thing is, I've never even seen it played!   ;D  I've just read a bunch of reviews.  I'll probably end up with it eventually, but I'm just not playing videogames these days.  Too busy.  I actually rented Samba De Amigo last week and I returned it yesterday having never even taken the disc out of the case.  I get a coupon for a free game rental from Blockbuster once a month; otherwise I wouldn't have rented a game at all . . . but that just gives you an idea of how much I'm playing these days.  I had a new game right there . . . one I've never played, but has always interested me . . . and I didn't even pick it up once in the five days it sat next to the TV.

I know the feeling - Thanksgiving break starts tomorrow for my school, and it will be the first time in three months I've had time to even think about gaming.

(edit) As for the World of Goo, if you get a chance try it out - it is definitely one of the better Wii games out right now.

Speaking of unreal, Gamestop has put "TV Game Show King" out as a a commercial release.  I couldn't tell it had changed any from the WiiWare version...which means I saved $20. Whoo!

Just picked up World of Goo and Tetris Party last night.  Well worth the price for both of those titles!
I especially like the coop mode of Tetris.

I got World of Goo last night and played through the first Chapter.  My wife and I both really love it.  It's SO ---smurfing--- CHARMING.  It makes me feel like a little kid and I find myself grinning over and over again at random ---Cleveland steamer---.  The whole thing is just really really well done.

That pretty much sums it up.  For example, the sound crisp sound effects at the end of a level when the container fills with goo and then empties.  So awesome.

World of Goo is one of those games that proves that the best games are often the simplest, IMHO.
