My old haunts in Montreal are GONE!
« on: November 21, 2008, 04:05:14 pm »
Visited Montreal a few days ago. I lived there 20 years ago and my friends and I would often go "arcade hopping" down the main strip. (Did that before hitting drinking age, but then even after, we just mixed it up as a combined "bar hopping and arcades". Playing games when drunk is really challenging.  ;) ). There were something like 8 different arcades along a 1 to 2 mile stretch.

I didn't exactly revisit the entire stretch, but enough to see where 5 of those 8 used to be. Now, they are all just memories. Some are decrepit boarded up buildings, converted to stores, or the worst... converted to tacky porno stores and peep shows. The latter still bore an unlit and half-covered remnant of the original huge sign "Amusements CASINO". Now that sign is just dark and dirty, much like the current business below it.

Are you referring to the ones that used to be along St. Catherines Street? If so, I used to frequent these all the time.

Yep. Sometimes we would do the entire strip starting at Atwater mall, it had an arcade called "Le Jeu". We'd start there, spend a couple bucks, then move to the place right across from the "Forum". Couple bucks there and move on to the next one, etc, all the way to "hooker corner" (St-Laurent). Now that I think about it again, we're talking 10 arcades.

Then on other days, I'd just stick to the one next to my dingy apartment. I lived above a sex shop on St-Catherine, between Guy and St-Marc. There was a nice newer arcade in the next building over.  :)
