Roms and copyright laws?
« on: November 16, 2008, 03:54:13 pm »
So now that my Mame cab is finished I am curious about all of the copyright violations that precede each game?  The newest game that I have played has been from 1999 and the oldest from 1979.  Does anyone...(game makers/developers) even really care anymore??

I mean there are still plenty of places out there that have these old stand-ups for public use...

What's the deal??  I guess it depends on who you ask right?  Is this a taboo topic?

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

Look at the download market for Wii, PS3, etc....

They care very much.

You're probably not going to have the FBI knocking on the door if that's what you're worried about (unless you do something silly like try to profit off them in any way).   However, most of the games are still protected by copyright, regardless of their availability.   Even titles by defunct companies (Exidy, for example) had their rights transferred to other parties (Mean Hampster Software in Exidy's catalog's case).

I don't think it's taboo to discuss the legalities of it.  The only taboo is giving links to where to find them.

Not taboo to discuss it, but has been discussed to death.
