Candy Cab with rotatable monitor
« on: September 23, 2008, 09:14:49 am »
Hi All,
This is my 1st Mame cab build, having been watching and reading posts for a while, thought I would plunge in. Thanks to Mako72, and Lettuce in particular for providing me with inspiration.
Last week got a 19 inch Dell monitor which the design is built around. After 3 solid days work I wanted to show my progress.
Comments, views etc appreciated.
Cheers Pinguy

Wow - looks awesome.  How do you plan to rotate the monitor?  There are a lot of great projects around here that use motors and plug-ins which automate the entire process.   Great progress for only 3 days!

Hi,
I struggled to figure out a simple way to rotate the monitor, then came up with an obvious, simple alternative. As the monitor is fixed to the outer bezel, all I have to do is pull the monitor out of the casing from the front, rotate and place back in. The slope on the machine tilts the monitor back, plus I have designed the retaining bar to clip into the inner frame .
Pinguy.

Wow its weird seeing someone else building one of these. Im glad other people like this design. I wish the kilercabs site was still around cause they had loads of great candy cab pictures and info. Whats the width of yours? Mine is only 22". Yours looks a little wider than mine. It sure makes things a lot easier when you dont have to hold a 60lb monitor. keep up the work. I'll race ya!

Hi Mako,
Mine is 25 inch wide, 51 inch height, and 25 inch deep. So yes you were right mine is a touch overweight  :D
Back to work tomorrow, so won`t be able to do anymore progress till weekend.
Still waiting for Happ control buttons, and an Ultrastik joystick, with encoder harness via mail order. Now I have got to start thinking of CP layout.
The race is on buddy !!
All the best Pinguy.

looks good man.

Might have to make a dedicated Naomi Candy cab like this one once I get my fighter cab finished.

Looks good.
Have you considered putting handles to the outer bezel? They are ugly, but would make
it easier to handle the monitor.
Where will the speakers go?
How does the retaining bar work in the vertical position, does it grab
the side? I'm not sure if this would work but maybe there could be two retaining bars at perpendicular edges, so that at least one of them would grab the bottom in either position. If the bars are not too long, I think they would both fit there. What do you think?

- EDIT -
Sorry, after looking the pictures again, I see that this would not work, since there's no space for a retaining bar at the sides. Please ignore the last suggestion. :-[

Hi Zupapa,
To answer a couple of your questions, I have got hold of some micro pc speakers which are pod shaped, these will fit to the left and right of the monitor bezel. Did think about handles for lifting the screen in and out - but the screen is light enough to enable easy rotation.
Yes you are right regarding the retaining bar - it locks into place either in the horizontal or vertical position, so I think stability is ok.
Thanks for the questions, here is a link to the monitors - only 5watts per channel, but because so close to you think lound enough (for now anyway)

Thanks for the interest Pinguy  :)

Thought it was time for an update,
Still got cpo artwork and cabinet decals to do, plus need a coin door lock to finish of, plus might incorporate a few small buttons for the jukebox side of things.

As usual comments, suggestions welcome.

Yes the paint job consisted of 2 coats undercoat, followed by 5 coats of a hi gloss finish black. All applied by mini roller. Will post further pics showing screen in vertical mode when I get chance.

Great work pinguy!

This design looks like it would be a lot lighter than the usual designs.
I know the ones I have built are as heavy as a sherman tank.

Again, good job on your cab..
