I am now 100% heating with wood
« on: October 24, 2008, 10:05:55 pm »
last year my mother gave me her old baby bear wood stove.
I put about $300.00 cash into it . Stove pipe kit etc.
It was great in the main room but outer rooms was cold.

This year I got into my drop ceiling (hall way has the drop celling)
(drop ceiling was my duct to the old furnace)

I hooked up 2 six inch duct fans to the vents in the main room.
duct the other rooms to the duct fans (each fan heats 2 rooms)
added a heat reclaimer and a 6 inch damper also

I have a little bit of a learning curve to learn.
2 days ago it got cold and I started a fire.  3 hrs later it was 100 degrees in wood burning room and 80 degrees in the other rooms. :o

next yer I hope to add 1 4 inch duct fan and run it to my 2 bath rooms.

the system work well. Better if you open the bed room doors so it acts like a cold air return

Just a thought... if you hooked up a coil of copper tubing over the top of the
thing... then you could run a dual heat system almost no extra cost...
(minus install cost and maybe a low power water pump)
and probably use less wood and get more even heating.

I forget what those water diffusion heat systems are called... but I remember
as a kid that they worked really well in the house we were in.

A long time ago when I was but an electrician's helper, we wired a house that the owner had installed a wood stove in the basement. They then put just the "grill" heat registers in each upper rooms floor.
We wired the house in summer, so I dont know how it worked, but the owner claimed he heated his old house the same way and it kept the whole house warm. The heat goes up into the upper rooms. All the mess is in the basement.
I can see where it would work, of course not all of us have a basement as big as the upper floor.

One other thing you might could do in your situation.
If you have overhangs above each door (space between the top of the door and the ceiling), install fans to blow air from one room to another through this overhang. You can get fan grills that dont look too bad, but the only problem might be the wiring.

My brother in law heated his house with a wood stove and install fans between each room. It worked real good. The heat goes up, so think of the overhang as a dam, the room has to fill up with heat to the level of the top of the door before going to the next room. A fan transfer this heat quicker, thus less time for the heat to cool.
I was really surprised how well that idea worked.
