Freecycle Score!
« on: October 30, 2008, 07:37:12 pm »
Sometimes patience and wading through all the crap with freecycle pays off.  I just got a working Commodore 64 with floppy drive, vic-modem, and dot-matrix printer!

I just hooked it to the TV using a generic Nintendo type RF cable.

I am however missing the cables that run from the floppy to the keyboard, and the cable from the printer to the keyboard.

Anyway...

 :woot :woot :woot

aren't they just 6 pin DIN connectors? isn't that like midi or something.  I figure if you really want to, as a temporary solution, you could use some wire, paperclips, and whatever you have lying around to construct one of those cables to go between the system and peripheral to try it out

Without knowing if they run parallel or serial ("cross-over") it would be a risk just guessing.

That said, that kind of thing is almost always documented on the web somewhere.  :)

I might be able to get you a copy of Fast Hackem or Mr. Nibbles (if you have 4 days to spare to copy a game like Zork).  If you do get it working I will gladly show what time it is in Bruce Lee.  Nice score.

On a side note I would be willing to bet my last dollar that floppy disk sales declined at the exact same time  as single hole puncher sales increased

If you have the pinout for both ends you could always just put in a more modern connector and use available cables.  Odds are the ancient ones are pretty crappy by now anyway.
