Arcade Monitor help
« on: October 21, 2008, 02:12:14 pm »
Hello everyone.  My first post.

I got bit by the MAME bug in July of 08 and since then I can't stop trying to perfect my cabinet.  The cabinet was a gutted MK2 machine that was going to be thrown away.  Lucky for me I saved it and "mamed" it.

My situation:

For the sake of simplicity, I bought a 25 inch TV without and S video and hooked it up.  Ofcourse the letters are somewhat smudged and the picture isnt all that great.  Someone who owes me a favor is going to GIVE me an arcade monitor for free.  I'm pretty sure its from the street fighter days but none the less, it's free.  It's from an existing gutted cabinet.

My questions:

What do I need to hook up that arcade monitor to my mame PC as a monitor?
What power source do I need to feed it?
Is it easy or should I just tell him "no thanks"?
What else do I need to configure on mame?

Sorry for the overload of questions but I'm seeing the guy on Monday.

Thanks in advance.  This is a GREAT forum.

1) You'll need either an ArcadeVGA card from Ultimarc, or a video card capable of soft 15khz
2) You'll need to feed it power through an isolation transformer most likely
3) depends...
4) not sure

Oh, and by the way...  arcade monitors can be dangerous!  It is possible, that even unplugged, they can store harmful voltages capable of doing bad things to you.  So be careful.  :burgerking:

Thanks for the reply.

Thats exactly why i went with the TV solution as well.  One less thing to worry about when there's kids around.

I'll wait for a few more reponses to sway my mind.

Thanks again.

Another thing to consider, 25" TV's are pretty easy to come by.  Try your local Freecycle, Craigslist, or even local thrift stores for a TV on the cheap.
