Help: Just got MK1, Everything works but Monitor. No Power?
« on: October 09, 2008, 02:22:40 am »
This is the machine I got off ebay.

Link
Rick, the guy I got it from has been very nice and trying to help out, but I am kinda NOOB and after trouble shooting with him he is asking for the monitor board to be shipped back so he can have a look at it. ( i dont really want to take apart the monitor and possible get a shock~! )

We got the machine and everything turns on, the lights, the sound, and you can play the game with the panel but the screen never fires up. If you look in the back the monitor never gets any power.

Now, when I purchased the game the pictures have the video on, and looking good. My question is, what do you guys think could have went wrong in shipping? It was crated nicely. There was a black wire hanging from the flowback near the red one that goes to the rear necktube board. It seemed to have been yanked out. We soldered it back and still nothing.

We also heard that when you rattled the monitor chases a little you heard a zap zap coming from the flow back area.. ( its a brand new flowbacK )  Rick said it is 100% that the flow back solders on the board ( the pins ) must have come loose during the shipping.. Thats what the zap zap was all about... So I soldered that back together, and still no monitor....

We tried everything it seems like.. everything looks and feels like its clipped in right.

Has anyone had this problem? When receiving a used machine from somone that the monitor did just not turn on but everything else worked... What could be loose? what is it that I need to fire up that bad boy.. I really don't want to have to resort to sending back the monitor board and miss out on another week with no MORTAL KOMBAT playing.

How can I test to see if I can get the the monitor fired up even if I have no playable picture... I just want some juice!

Thanks
I will be working on the machine again tomorrow with my friend whos better at this and understands solder better then I

-Owen

You have been told about disharging a monitor, right? I assume if you are resoldering pins on the flyback (you mean flyback instead of flow back, right?) you know about this as that is where a lot of the high voltage is.

Lots of things can go bad during shipping.  It's fairly rough on a machine.

Ensure that everything is connected where it's supposed to go: neckboard tightly, monitor input, monitor power, yoke, etc.

The charge is in the tube, not the flyback.  But he should still be cautious.

Isn't the flyback the source of the high voltage? Guess that goes to show why I don't usually give monitor advice...

It sure is...when it's on.  If he's soldering when it's on, then I wanna meet this guy.  Must have brass balls the size of grapefruit!

Heh. I assumed the source of the high voltage would also hold quite a bit of residual unless discharged. If he has brass balls the size of grapefruits he needs to stay away from electricity all together...

Post a picture of this mysterious black lead.. show where it came from and where you resoldered it to. If it is the G2 lead... you will have no picture.

Also try increasing the setting on the G2/Screen control. This is pretty much always the lowest control on the flyback...

What happens, by the way is there any glow in the neck of the tube to indiacte heater voltage... on turn on do you hear what sounds like a static charge indicating high voltage?
