Backgrounds in Space Invaders and Asteroids Deluxe not showing
« on: October 08, 2008, 09:23:04 am »
I posted a similar question in the Main Forums area, but did not get many responses, so I am posting here as well.  I am still having the same issue with Space Invaders and have been trying some things to fix it, but no luck.  I started thinking and remembered that Asteroids Deluxe has the same type of background.  I checked and it is not displaying either.  I do no like using most of the artwork, because they end up making the actual game smaller, but with these two I would like to have the background show as they do not change the game size.  Below is my original post.

When I launch space invaders throu MameUI32 or Mala, the Space Invaders background is not showing up.  I have artwork turned on and it works fine in all the rest of my games.  It runs and looks like the first 3 screen shots on this page, just a black background:

I would like for it to look like the last screen shot on that page, with planet and stars in the background.

When I look at the invaders.zip file, there is a background but it is rotated, presumably for vertical monitors.  Is there a way to make the background work for horizontal monitors?

Thanks for any assistance.

Anyone?  I can't believe I am the only one experiencing this?

Total guesses. :dunno

One possibility: the art file and the mame version don't match; mame had a major video change after 0.106 which invalidated the old, low quality backgrounds.

Which version number (0.127u2 vs 0.106) mameUI are you using?  If it's a semi-recent one, did you get the background from the official site?  Also, are you running mameUI32 though mala, or are you running mame?

Second possibility: you (accidentally?) disabled the background for just those games.  This can be done two places: the game.ini file and the game.cfg file.  I doubt it's the first, but the second is a remote chance.  Either look in the game's cfg file in the cfg folder with a text editor and see if there's a video section, or start the game press tab and scroll down to "Video Options".

Like the previous poster said the OP's problem sounds like a file mismatch OR a misconfiguration somewhere. I think MAMEUI lets the user change the properties for each game individually. It's possible the games in question have individual properties that are overriding MAMEUI's global settings. All of that is assuming your paths are well set, your game and artwork zip filenames match and that you are talking about astdelux.zip and invaders.zip specifically.
