The Arkader - The Slim Cab
« on: October 04, 2008, 08:04:09 am »
I like those slim cabs everyone has been building lately, so I decided to make one myself but more true to form as a SLIM cab and not one that is slim and is free standing.

This thing will be positioned in a recess of a few inches, but just enough to house a LCD and my X -Arcade (at the moment), my old PC and consoles.  I also want some black light cold cathode sides and a place to house all my gadgets.  I'm tired of forgetting to plug in my Ipod, Phone whatever.  I want a home for it all.

Also today I decided to make it into a piece of furniture to house all my Anime and boys toys I have in storage.  The location faces my bed so I can watch movies, play WOW and make it a jukebox instead of having my main PC do it, which I want to devote to productivity.  Also I have two LCD TopGuns that are begging to be put somewhere useful.  Also I can retire the server and channel all this activity to it and save some money on the leckie bill.

My inspiration was at the library.  I saw one of those information kiosks, and after taking pictures of it, decided to model my cab on its design.  I also love the Naomi type cabs which are all pure design, but don't have need room for the CRT monitor and heavy footprint.

This is what I came up with, but had problems with the control panel as I want it to be hidden away and not sticking out.  So I plan to build a revolving panel that will be geared to allow slow movement and be secure.  Later to add the linear actuators so It can open up with a voice command and not a press.

I have a lot of work in front of me, with the building of the frame and the CPU cage as I would like a proper PC enclosure but decided to have it mounted on the back for better ventillation.  The cabinet will have internal shelves for the Xbox, DC and PSX, but I am also looking at getting Emulators for these consoles, execpt the Xbox, which should be at home in there.  The PSU is really neat as the USB ports are still powered after switch off, also I have a controller on the PSU fan that will keep the unit cool but quiet.

I also want the the LCD to manually rotate, but with only 8 inches depth to play with, I will have to get creative.

Now I'm hoping the weather will let up so I can get this bad boy together.   ;D

It had decided to quit raining on Saturday, so I ran out and I bought the wood, and started measuring and figuring out how I can centralize the weight in order to have the cabinet rigid enough to kick butt on SF2 without ripping it out of the wall.  Oh and I have done that last time I pinned a cab to the wall....   :blah:

I need help on the base.

Any suggestions on how you guys make your footprint base on a framed cabinet?  I'm thinking of angled feet making the structure press into the wall, instead of falling forwards.  The height should be no more than 6 feet, and width, 2.5 feet.

Any help would be great.
