WG 25K7193 Picture Distortion Issue(contrast) -- [FIXED]
« on: October 01, 2008, 12:22:12 am »
Yeah...I know it's kinda weird to be posting about one I already fixed, but I have gotten SO much help from these forums and had it not been for this kind of info being here, not only could I have not fixed this monitor, but I could not have done the other 3 I have under my belt now either...so I guess what I'm saying here is just that I'm trying to give a little something back where I can...that being said, on with the show...

The Background Story:
So I got this monitor in a Turkey Hunting USA cab I got a while back and quite honestly the picture has never been great. But it worked and everyone liked playing it(surprisingly enough) so I basically left well enough alone since it seemed to be working anyways.

The Problem:
Cut to about a month later and turn it on one arcade night and the picture is a little off(too much red and out of focus) and the gun won't register an accurate shot...adjusting the contrast on the remote and the focus on the flyback solved this for aabout a week or two, then it happened again...readjust again...about a week more and it does it even worse and no amount of adjustment will both fix the picture AND get the gun to register again....sigh...

The Solution:
So, based on what I've read on these forums in other threads, my first reaction is: cap kit. Unfortunately could not find one pre-made that had ALL the caps I wanted in it, so ended up ordering them all(which worked out quite well actually-$12 + shipping for almost every cap on the board-all the ones I was looking to replace at any rate).
Also, although this is very embarrassing...while removing the chassis I twisted it all around getting it out and the wire going to the white piece on the neck card where the tube plugs in broke off X_x...I managed to get the broken piece out with some very small tweezers and lotsa patience, then stripped off a little of the end of the wire and eventually got it back in there to my satisfaction...
Long story short, a week later I get the new caps, get them installed, and the monitor is 100% better. The picture is bright and crisp and also warms up VERY fast compared to how long it originally took. Two weeks later and it's still perfect. I couldn't be happier! (see my thread o' problems with my pentranic monitor and you'll see why a fix this easy makes me so happy-lol!)
For those who care, the caps I ordered(as well as quantities) were the following:
200v 560uf (1)
200v 7uf (1)
160v 22uf (1)
25v 1000uf (1)
35v 100uf (1)
25v 10uf (2)
50v 1uf (5)
16v 100uf (1)
16v 470uf (2)
50v 10uf (5)
25v 22uf (2)
35v 2200uf (1)
The quantities just reflect how many I decided to order, not necessarily the number replaced on the board...but presumably you should be good if you ordered the same quantities and as cheap as they cost, why not, right?
Please bare in mind I might have left a couple out since I believe I had a couple of the ones I needed on hand already, but I think I ordered more cause I was going to use the ones I had...anyways, let me know any caps I've left out that are important.

At any rate, I hope this helps someone out someday as I have been helped by so many other threads (and people!) here. Thanks to everyone once again for all their help in the past(and probably the future too-lol!).
Feel free to contact me should there be any questions, but I think this one is pretty self explanatory. ;)

Oh! and can someone tell me what the hell that little white thing on the neck card where the tube plugs in is called so I can stop calling it "that little white thing on the neck card where the tube plugs in" please? TIA!  ;D

That white thing is called a picture tube socket.

You have a k7000 monitor. Why did you not order a k7000 capkit from Bob Roberts or Zanen Electronics? They have them all prepackaged with caplist included.

Most honest answer I can give you is paranoia and not doing enough research on it...I was afraid it wasn't the same thing...live and learn...that's why I like it here-always learn something everytime I come by!
btw thanks to you and kevin for the clarification on the tube socket...seems obvious, but I would never have guessed that-lol!

I found that Bob Roberts' kit was missing 3 caps.  I still need to order and replace those three -- I don't remember what they are now, and I'm away from my cab. :P
