PC games without disc in drive? (Solved)
« on: September 29, 2008, 05:19:59 pm »
I have  a PC game on CD that has been installed on my hard drive but the game wants the disc to be in the drive to run. Is there a work around to make it think it's in the drive?
I won't have easy access to the drive in my cab and I would like more than one PC game on there so I need to find a way around this

make an iso of the game disc, then use a virtual drive tool (like Daemon Tools) to mount the iso

I've never done it myself so I'm no judge - but this looked like a good tutorial http://www.digital501.com/20060316112/how-to-create-a-virtual-cd-drive-windows-xp/

If anyone has better instructions though, please feel free to disregard.

Cynos had a better suggestion.  Gamecopyworld.com offers "fixed" .exe files for hundreds of PC games that allow you to run games without the CD/DVD and it is completely legal as long as you own the original.  This method eliminates the need for a virtual DVD drive and you won't need that huge ISO image that is eating up your hard drive space.

Thanks,
I thought so too as you dont have to keep changing the iso depending on game

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

I doubt the software companies share this view.

It's a better solution albeit one that's not quite as legit (I'm guessing modifying the .exe to circumvent copy protection methods would run afoul of the licensing agreement).  Not that the virtual drive method couldn't be used of nefarious purposes, but it can at least be considered a legitimate backup tool.

I've tried the virtual drive thing once to see if I could get the PC version of Mortal Kombat 4 to run without the actual CD in the drive. I never could get it to work and ended up using one of the no-CD patches. Of course, I lost all of the cool game music that was on the CD. So there are tradeoffs sometimes.
