DK sound issue
« on: September 27, 2008, 09:31:48 pm »
My DK seems to have developed a bit of a sound issue. The running sound and Kong's chest beats are normal, but the other sounds (background music, point award sound, etc) are real quiet, except when the game is doing the chest beat sound. I have a cocktail, so it has the 4 board set. I took the boards out, cleaned them up a bit (they were dusty). I didn't pull out any of the board cables, except the ones attached to the machine. Could one of those be causing a problem? Nothing to do with the problem, but I also cleaned up the fan, which is now quiet :) (it was very loud before) I tried playing with the sound pots, both the main one next to the monitor, and the one on the sound board, all it did was make the running/chest beat sound louder, but didn't do anything for the other sounds. Any ideas?

Cap the audio amplifier.

Not to sound like a total noob, but can you give a little more detail? I assume this cap is on the audio board, correct? Or is there a separate amp board? I don't have any schematics, just the regular DK manual, which does give a parts list, but no schematics. If it's the audio board, do you know which cap it might be? In the manual, there's 5 different types of ceramic capacitors (21 total), 9 types of electrolytic (21 total), 2 polyester film (3 total) and 1 Tantalum. Thanks for any info. I'm new to this, as this is my first real arcade game (I have a MAME cab I built, but it's a PC I built, of course)

Usually when "caps" are mentioned we mean the electrolytic one's, as these are the one's that go bad over time.
So I think he meant replacing all the caps on the separate sound amp on the monitor.

Bob Roberts sells a kit for this:

Also here's some good info about sound on DK (jr.):

On the main sound board (top board of the 4-board stack), there is a volume pot for the digital sounds.  Crank it up and you'll be good to go.

Tried that already (which I mentioned in the initial post ;D ) Thanks for the suggestion though.

Correct.  I meant to do a capkit on the audio amplifier board.  It will be mounted to the monitor frame, so you'll need to pull the monitor to get to it.  All the info you need has been previously posted.  If you have any monitor problems, now may be the time to cap that as well.  I won't lie to you, capping a DK cocktail monitor so far has been the most frustrating, yet satisfying experience as capkits go for me.

I guess it could be possible the volume pot could be going bad as well.  You could always check that before doing a cap kit.

Ok, next is either the DAC08 or the LM324 on the sound board. (Not the amplifier, the amp is fine if other sounds are loud enough)
