How to configure Smash TV?
« on: June 13, 2003, 10:16:36 am »
What is the correct way to configure smash TV joysticks?

The defaults didn't work well at all.  I went through the setup and set Left joy u/D/L/R and Right U/D/L/R.  But it still doesn't work as expected.  Apparently I'm misinterpreting the labels for each control in Mame?  Any advice?

Thanks,
Wade

What type of control are you using? Smash TV used a rotary joystick. That may have a large effect on it.

Ummm.... Actually I beleave they were 8ways.... I just looked at a pic of the SmashTV CP and the look to be 8ways.  I can play it in Mame32 when I set the controls with the keyboard, so.... I could be wrong.. :-\

Just check KLOV and it lists the controls as 2 8ways.

player 1 left/up
player 1 left/down

ect..

if you change the setting for just that game (not defaults) they are right at the top... but you CAN set the defautls for 2 joystick games... search down the efaults and you will find them..

(and if the answer is confusing... press 'tab'... and look around)

Lilwolf,

   That is what I tried.  Player 1 Left/U, Player 1 Left/D, etc. for my left stick and Player 1 Right/U, Player 1 Right/D, etc. for the right (fire) stick.  But it definitely isn't working correctly!  I even went through the whole process twice and it still played the same.  I guess I'll try it again this weekend, maybe I had a brain fart and totally set something up wrong.

Thanks,
Wade

Don't try to config with the game paused (if you are pausing the game).  I have heard others report that it won't work well.

Thanks for the suggestion.  Honestly, I can't remember if I paused it or not.

You aren't giving details as to what isn't working, you are just saying it isn't working.  WHAT isn't working?  The controls?  The assignments?  what?????

SirPoonga,

Well, the assignments do look strange.  For example, after I hit player 1 RIGHT Up on the joystick, it says in mame something like, "2" instead of "R" (or whatever the actual key is).  The things popping up on the screen were not what I expected to see.

Then, when I play the game, I think I can run in all directions but I can only fire to the upper left.  Can't fire in any other direction (I think pushing the fire joystick in any other direction still makes it just fire to the upper left).

Does that help?  If redoing it and making sure it ISN'T paused doesn't fix the problem, I'll pay close attention to what keys show up in the mame control setup, as well as exactly how the player reacts.  I'm just going from memory from trying this about a week ago.

Thanks,
Wade

Does it work with your keyboard, but not your encoder?  Sounds like it might be a wiring issue here.

and even thought I'm working... I had to test it out for you... it is working... and I was able to change all the keys to something else.... so it's not mame70 specific problem..

you might want to delete the smashtv.cfg file in the cfg directory.  might help... Also the smashtv.nv in the nvram directory  (and I don't know what the smashtv.sta in the sta directory is for... but might as well kill that one too)

Lilwolf,

   Well at first I thought it was wiring too, since I had just made a change.  But then I played a bunch of other games like MKII and used both sticks and everything worked fine.

   Actually I'm using mame 0.67 or 0.68 on my box, I'm not exactly sure.  I figured it's better to run the oldest possible version, since mame keeps getting slower and slower.  I just check the new games each version and won't upgrade until I see a new game I like. ;)

   If all else fails this weekend I'll delete those files and see if it helps.  Sure is weird, I must just be reading the config wrong or something.  I haven't had a problem setting up controls on any of the other games (well, other than some trial and error for the weird MK controls)... ;)

I believe that is the save state folder.

You might have the cfg file for that game set to READONLY also.  That wouldn't allow it to be saved over.

Try this.

<tab> game imputs

Use your keyboard to register these keypresses;

left ctlr ;
left - left arrow
right - right arrow
down - down arrow
up - up arrow

Right ctlr;

left - d
right - g
down - f
up - r

Never played smash tv before this thread - went home figured out the config and now have a new favorite.

PS - it didn't work correctly until I pulled out the keyboard and configed on that.

Check this out.

I did it this weekend, it worked perfectly.  All the keypresses showed up on the screen properly, instead of the weird keys I was seeing previously.  Maybe I had it paused the first time (though that has never caused problems in any of the other games I've set up), or maybe I had accidentally switched to the wrong Keywiz keyset.  Who knows??  ???

Thanks for the replies guys!  I guess I just need to try the obvious from now on (or wait a few days... and try again) before posting.

actually, pausing will usually cause problems.  It;s odd that it does though.

Yeah, that's what many people have experienced, I just thought it was weird that I had never had the pausing problem until now.  I almost always pause when I'm setting up controls.  Weird.

To Save yourself grief, you should just write a controler.ini file...that way any game you use 2 8 ways for will work....

Smash TV, Total Carnage, Cloak and Dagger, Black Widow, ect, ect, ect.
