are european arcade monitors the same as american?
« on: September 20, 2008, 07:04:31 am »
ok this might sound stupid but is there a difference between a european and american monitor?  i would assume not as it's a monitor and should be capable of any signal you throw at it right?   the reason i'm asking is cause i'm Air Force, stationed in Germany...  i was browsing german ebay and stumbled upon a newly restore R-Type cabinet with a 25" monitor, and it's going for 5 euro.  the seller isn't getting rid of the PCB or power supply, but i'm just interested in the monitor.  i gasped when i saw it was pick-up only but the guy lives only an hour away!

what do you guys think?  and can anyone tell me much about this monitor just from the pic?

thats a hantarex polo 1 monitor,it will work fine on 120vac in the usa.
the only difference you find in monitors really is the voltage needed to run them.
the one you have pointed out is whats known as a free voltage range, this means it runs at anything from 80vac to 265vac also as it has an onboard switch mode pòwer supply there is no need for an isolation transformer which means you can plug the voltage in directly to a wall socket

make sure you get the video input plug/cable and the voltage input plug/cable with the monitor as they could be difficult to find in the u.s

also important to note that this is cga(15khz) only monitor so it works on the older type games,if you wanted to run a pc or another vga signal you would need some kind of signal converter whether it be an arcade vga card or soft 15k running from a standard vga card or some kind of dedicated vga to cga converter

i have worked on alot of these and i love them, very easy to repair and reliable-i have approx 20 of these monitors in my arcade.Ken hates them but there again you americans are strange ;D

so if i got an Ultimarc arcadeVGA card i would be able to run pretty much everything on it?  i'm not very interested in OLD OLD games or any games newer than 2000.  i'm pretty much wanting to play anything ranging from donkey kong to killer instinct 2.  but i'm confused about the frequency...  the monitor is 15khz and the card converts all pc output to a usable 15khz?  or the card outputs every game to its native resolution and freq and this monitor will only be able to display games that run on 15?

sorry but i'm not very knowledgeable in the way of arcade monitors.  regardless, i'm assuming 5 euro is an unbeatable deal for the monitor alone.

an arcade vga card will send everything at 15khz and is compatible with this monitor,
5 euros is amazing for this monitor,i would give 80 euros for the chassis alone

well i just won it for E 21.50  (or $30) so i guess i'll be making a three hour round trip to pick it up... not too shabby.  now all i need is a ArcadeVGA and somewheres to put it.  the wife won't be too excited    :P
