Would this monitor work for a Donkey Kong cabinet?
« on: September 17, 2008, 09:54:16 pm »
First post but I have done a lot of reading on here. I apologize in advance for any stupid questions.

I just got a Donkey Kong cabinet (DKG4) for $50. The monitor was working when I bought it but no video. The cabinet, control panel, and marque are all in pretty good shape. When you turned it on the monitor would come on and you could here the high pitched whine. Unfortunately, the monitor was not bolted down and it got bumped around during the move to my house. I have been doing some Reading on how to possibly ix the monitor (Sanyo EZ20) but I will admit I am way over my head. I have read that the Nintendo cabinets/boards require a special monitor. I found this monitor on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180289615154&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123

I sent a message to the seller and they say it will work with a $5 adapter plug they sell.

Other than having a different power supply, would this work in my Donkey Kong cabinet as is?

Thanks for the help!

No, it is not a Sanyo monitor.  And it comes with no frame!  Just a tube and the electronics.  Look for a Sanyo 290EZV, they come up all the time on ebay.

It is possible to use other monitors than a 20EZ in Nintendo cabinets. Forum member "Wade" has a Wells Gardnder running great in a DK Jr. I really don't know how he did it, but it is possible and wanted you to know that. You can always PM him for further info.

I had foud this at the arcade shop for $69 but the Mike's arcade version looks to be a lot less expensive. http://www.arcadeshop.com/pics/dk-dkjr-monitor-conv-kit-adapter.jpg

I guess it is going to end up being if I can find cheaper: a Sanyo EZ-20 or a standard monitor and converter

Thanks for the posts. I will hit up Wade too.

I have another question. What's a good deal on a monitor? Would it be cheaper to get an old Sanyo-EZ20 or buy a new monotor with am inverter?

So far, I have been able to find a used Sanyo for $208 including shipping. Is this a good deal?

So far, a new monitor is in the $150-200 range plus I would have to by an inverter. What's a good price for a replacement monitor?

I can be a bit of a tight wad so I can hold out until I find a good deal. Maybe I will get lucky and find a used cabinet with working monitor somewhere.

Buy a new monitor with an inverter/amp.

Even if you find a Sanyo 20EZ for "the right price" ... there is no guarantee that the flyback will hold up and it could die on you. So unless you are into monitor repairs and searching for obsolete parts ... buy new.

There's sooo many ways to go about doing this it's hard to tell any one person just exactly how to go about it.

Theoretically you could get the monitor "kit" you first posted about and swap the tube and parts into your existing frame, you will probably have to mount the chassis a bit differently.
Or you could go with something like this:http://www.happcontrols.com/monitors/490727vp2.htm
Either of those ways you will need an inverter adapter of sorts like from Mikes Arcade.
http://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?sku=NININVAMP
Of course he does also carry a ready to go drop in, plug and play monitor, bit pricey, but an option.
http://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?sku=MONITORN

People tend to have varied opinions on monitor brands and such, but basically if you buy an off the shelf 19" CGA monitor remember that you will need the adapter and you will probably also have to do some minor wiring harness changes in order to connect it up to  your Nintendo cabinet. (video signal connectors may be different) And be sure that it has either a universal or vertical mounting frame.

One other thing to note is that the Sanyo runs off 100V ...... so the power "outlet" that is in the bottom of that cab in which your monitor is plugged into now is only 100v AC.
A typical 120v monitor will run on this, but it may be a bit flakey. So you may or may not have to re-route power to the new monitor.

Just out of curiosity ...... what's wrong with the monitor you have now?

Thanks again. Here is the scoop on the current monitor:

I bought a used Donkey Kong cabinet that had no video but the Sanyo monitor did come on (you could hear the high pitched whine). Everything else is in pretty good shape. Anyway, when I loaded it in my truck, the monitor shifted because the guy didn't have it bolted down inside the frame. When I got it home and turned it on, the monitor doesn't come on at all now. I checked and it does have power going to it (100V). There is no power at the 300ma fuse. I did find a loose black wire that I plugged back into the tube. But no luck.Do you think it's fixable?

Most certainly it's fixable..... probably just need to pull the main chassis enough to check for broken solder joints around all the larger pins like the power connector, the flyback, etc.

They can be a pain to get apart, but not too bad if you just take your time.
Discharge the tube if you need to pull the anode lead off. (the big suction cup)

I did some investigation before (prior to this thread) and found a black wire was unplugged that went to the back of the tube. There was also a screw broke off on the board right where it seemed to be grounding to the frame. I fixed both of those but I will keep looking.

I'm sure I will be back with another question. Thanks!
