Mame32UI button configuration, please help!
« on: September 17, 2008, 01:12:26 am »
Any time I start a game I have to reconfigure my Tab button back to it's original button. It always switches from button 15 to button 16 every time. After I'm done playing a game, it switches back to the wrong button once I start another.

I'm running all of my emulators on Mala, but even when I just run Mame it still does the same thing. I've tried resetting all of my settings to default, and even after that it still happens.

I'm stumped on what the problem could be, any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like either the default.cfg file or the whole cfg folder is read only.  Make sure both are read/write-able.

(I'm assuming other changes don't stick?)

Sorry I didn't respond fast, my hands have been full lately.

I know what files you're talking about, but how can I tell if they're read/write-able?

right click on the directory or files and go to properties. In the main tab there is a set of options for it. Depending on the OS, there may also be a security tab, this will include options for read/write enable.

Ok in the properties I don't see anywhere about writing but towards the bottom on the attributes there's 2 options, "read only" and "hidden" both of them are not checked.

There's also an "Advance" option next to it, when I select that it shows Archive and index attributes. There's 2 options, both of them are checked "File is ready for archiving" and "For fast searching, allow indexing service to index this file"

Is there anything I need to change?

That's correct.  (Checked means read only.)  Did you check both the cfg folder and the default.cfg file?  The folder should be "filled in", which is different from checked, and the file should be blank.

Get back if that's not the problem, but the other possibilities are a wide range.

Yea that's exactly how it is.

Could it be a hardware problem? I'm using a GP-Wiz Max 32.

What version of MAME are you running? If it is a 32 or UI version, you have to quit out using the menu (as opposed to the x button) for settings to be saved.

or try hitting tab in game, then picking controls for ALL GAMES instead of "THIS GAME"
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

I'm using the UI version, and I do quit out with the menu, not hitting esc.

That's exactly what I'm doing as well.

Are you using Vista? (I am and it can be a ---smurfette--- to deal with when it comes to allowing an EXE (like MAME) to save things.). If you are using Vista or Windows Server 2003, make sure to run MAME as admin or to set the entire directory that MAME is in as full access...

Can you give some screen shots of what your MAME and mame directory looks like? It might help, as you havent given some info that may be critical.

Also make sure that your computer is plugged in, that is another common mistake. (Sorry had to add that old cliche  ;D )

I'm using XP and it's always plugged in.

The computer is in my cabinet so just give me a little bit because I have to get my flash drive in there so I can get the shots from that computer to this computer.  In the meantime if there's anything else you need pics of let me know because it'll be about another day yet before I can get to it.

Thanks for all of the help and patience so far guys!

I forgot to mention I fixed the problem then, and I honestly think it's a problem with the encoder.

All of my wires are connected nice and neat, nothing sticking out of the connections, no wires touching each other, trust me I double and triple checked before trying what I did.

All I did was take the wire out of the connection of the encoder and putting it in another connection not being used and presto! Problem solved.

I ran the wire from a different button to the ---smurfy--- connector, and it did the same thing, now that button will switch from 15 to 16.

So IMO there's something wacky with that button input on the encoder. I'm not too worried about it, but later on if I wanted to add more buttons it kind of sucks that I have 1 less connection.
