Looking for a straight forward FTP --> XBOX tutorial

I need to add some new roms to my XBOX but I can't find any concise tutorials on how to do this.  I know nothing about ftp'ing but catch on quickly.

Any links or advice would be greatly appreciated.

It's easy.

You need just a couple of things. 

1.  The IP address of your Xbox.  If you are using Evox or something similar, it's easy to find.  Let me know if you can't find it.

2.  An FTP program.  You can do it with IE but it sucks.  Most people recommend Flashfxp.  Download it here:

Download and install it.  You get a 30 day trial or something with it.  Once its installed and ran, look on the toolbar in the middle for the "yellow" lightning bolt.  Click it and "Quick connect".  In the window that pops up, type your IP address for the XBox in the Server or URL space, user name in that box, and then the password in the appropriate box.

You're in.   

Drag the files you want to upload from the sub-window on the left to the window at the bottom.  In the right window, move in the directory to the folder that you want to upload to, then hit the 3rd button from the right (labeled Transfer selected" and BOOM, its done.

You may search the Xbox forums if you want pictures.  I read one a few years ago that had some good info.  I'll search for it and post if/when I find it.

Thanks for the direction, Hoopz.  Got the ftp client installed, the XBOX is hooked up and I believe all my setting are correct.  Trouble is, the client keeps timing out looking for the connection.  Not sure what the problem is at this point.  I've tried connecting through my router and directly between the pc and the xbox with no luck.

I'm going to test the cable out on another  (currently networked) device in the morning and see if I can rule out a cable problem.

What program are you running on the Xbox when it boots?  Evox, Ndure, XBMC etc?

You may also want to see if FTP is running on the Xbox when it boots.

It does sound like FTP isn't running.  I believe that's one of the options in EvoX - enabling FTP.  It tends to be on by default.  How did you get EvoX on there to begin with?  Or did someone else do it?

If you give us the exact error that the ftp client is reporting we can tell you the problem.

It's running XBMC (not installed by me) and FTP is enabled on boot.

It's not even trying to sign in when I connect which would make me think the connection is bad.  It appears that the cable I'm using is a straight through cable.  From what I've read the XBOX would need to be connected through my router in this case.  Yes?

Try creating a shared folder on your win box, in XMBC browse for the folder and copy the roms. I use avalaunch and it has ftp on by default, or my smartxx chip has it's own ftp client. You know the username and password is xbox , xbox?

Yes, I have been using 'xbox' as the user name and password.  Under 'user' in the settings it says (1/1) NoUser though.  I'll try creating the folder.

try 192.168.01 or 192.168.02 on the xbox settings

all you need is the xbox connected to the pc ethernet port by a cross-over cable a regular ethernet cable wont do it.

the xbox also need's to be booted into the dash that your using to FTP with and have the options set to.

it is also vital that your onboard lan is set to enabled in your pc's bios setting or it will never work.


if you cannot see a emblem with two little monitor screens side by side on you desktops toolbar then it is set do disabled in your bios.

Hook it up to your router, power on the XBox, go into your router and see what devices are attached.  That's the first step.  If you DONT see it, then it's either the router, Xbox's ethernet port, or the cable.

If you do see it, maybe it's a firewall issue.  I have Zonealarm and have to disable it before connecting with the router.  (I realize I don't need it running when using my router but I don't use the router all the time). 

If all else fails, can you burn the roms to a CD rom and access it from XBMC?  I've never done that but I think you can do it.  I'd still try and resolve the networking issue at some point though.

This was a good idea.  I did that and the XBOX shows up (along with my pc and XBOX 360).

I don't use a firewall so I disabled my antivirus.  I've also tried alternate IP's.  Still no go.

GOT IT! 

I changed the 'Assignment' setting to automatic(DHCP).  It generated a new IP (192.168.11.6).  I used that address and I was in.

Thanks for all the help and advice.  I couldn't have done it without you guys.

I've found in the past that connecting to an xbox thats not in the same ip range can be problematic..  ie 192.168.1.### for both pc and xbox

you can browse straight to your xbox from windows by typing

ftp://xbox:xbox@192.168.1.100 (usr:pass@xboxip) in an address bar

but transferring data is a bit slower then using an ftp client

I had issues getting that working right.  I didn't put much time into it though.  May check it out again sometime.

And to Nado, I tried IE and thought it was a pain compared to an FTP client.  I wasn't concerned about time, but it was just a pain to use.  I'd use it for a short term solution but not anything on a regular basis.
