replacement windows

I know there's a bunch of us that do our own home improvements.  Anyone got some suggestions on good replacement windows in the 200 range, or am I just kidding myself.  I'm sure for the first few years all windows work the same, but it's years 5-10 that are probably the killer.  I need 20 that's why I'm looking in the 200 range.  I would rather not take out a loan for windows unless I have to.

I know of two different local window businesses that will supply and install windows for $200-$250 a pop, lifetime warranties and all. They custom manufacture each window to fit the opening, so you don't have to worry about oddball sizes.

I was very happy with Window World (http://www.windowworldusa.com) - a franchised chain, so your results may vary. Replaced all the windows in my house about 4 years ago. Had almost all of them done with the disappearing "slide and hide" screens, which is an awesome thing if you have any kind of view.

The local Window World (SoCal) did a great job on the install; their crew banged it out in 2 days. So far no leaks or issues with the Canadian made "Irwin" windows.

One thing I will tell you - negotiate the price heavily. All the window companies quote very high but will come way down to get the job.

It was expensive to do the entire house but we have been really happy with the decision and consider it money well spent. The energy and noise reduction are significant.

The previous owner of my house had vinyl windows put in a couple of years before we bought it.  At 4 years we loved them.  At about 6-7 years they started to fall apart.  Now I wish we had the original wood windows.  At least they don't crack in half or have to be recaulked every single year.

Yah I hear ya Chad; although I am not too concerned as ours came with a lifetime warranty. Hopefully they won't self destruct, but if they do, hey - new window! Can't remember if they cover caulking or not but again so far so good.
