Hi from New Zealand
« on: May 14, 2009, 07:04:14 pm »
Howdy,

Long time listener, first time caller. I hope to be starting my own cabinet building adventure as so many before me have already. This place seems like a great resource so thought I'd sign up.

Am curious though, anyone else on here from lil ol NZ? I think I spotted a few Aussies?

Hope to hear more from you guys one construction begins! :)

g'day mate, Im from NZ, been in the states about 8.5 years now, I remember 'Wizards' in NZ, I used to go to the one in Tauranga on devonport road. It closed down in 1993 or 94 i think.

"Wizards" brings back memories, though it's not the same Wizards.

Mine was in Arlington, Tx, when I was growing up, back in, hmmm. early 80's I suppose. Yikes.

Anyway, first time I came across the Arcade Ambience project, those mp3's really took me back to those days, hanging out after junior high classes (or possibly during, on a few days  :) )

Good times.

Howdy, cheers :)

Haha yeah, there was a Wizards here in Chch too, don't know how long it's been gone for though. It's all Timezones now though. I walked into one the other day (for some recon on cabinet design) and it was all ticket dispensing games and a couple of racing games. That plus Tekken 5 on a big 32" LCD. But, in the far corner, all on it's own, collecting dust, an original 4 player Simpsons!

oh gutted, have you come to a show-stopper or just run out of time to finish?  :-\

Had a few drinks last night and ended up at that Timezone, 4 of us had a go on that old simpsons game! And wow I must be getting old because the RSI started to kick in... Starting to wonder if I should reconsider building a cabinet  :o

Lack of time, lack of money, lack of space to work on it etc.

Just checked out your thread, gutted you've had to pause cause it looks like a tidy little project!

Know what you mean about the monies though. We've had to go on a strict budget, but the budget allows for $20 into my "arcade machine" account, so it will be baby steps, but will get there :)

I've just invested in a jigsaw and some MDF, will hopefully start to work soon. When I've got something to show I will start a project thread.

Thanks for checking out my thread, i hope to start on the 'good copy' next month. Having to source parts and stuff from overseas really dents your pocket and slows you down!!  why can't they have chrome t-moulding in NZ :banghead:

are you building an upright or a cocktail?  got any plans?

Amen to that. I'm having a hard time finding a few parts, not a lot here. Will be ordering a few things from across the ditch, but those will have to wait until the aformentioned account gets some more money in it.

Yeah, I see you've done some full scale mock-ups, nice :)
I'll be working on an upright, based quite heavily on the Mortal Kombat cabs, with some minor tweaking. I'm still very undecided on a theme yet, I would like to go MK-ish, as that was one of my fav's.

Are you able to find ANY t-moulding here?? I saw some on trademe a while ago, but alas, no more.

Joysticks, buttons, ipac will most likely be from ozstick.com.au unless you've found a better location??

You can get t-moulding in NZ.....well i did for my last 2 arcade builds, but i was limited to basic colours

In terms of parts, it really depends on what you like.I've shopped in a lot of places over the course of the 5 machines i've built. I always like the good ol' MCA joysticks and buttons that are on most street fighters and mortal kombat's that are in NZ. They can really take a beating and the occasional lighter burn :D  the first lot i got somewhere in Aus, the second lot i got from trademe. There's a couple of good places in Aussy other than Ozstick.

I've purchased all 5 of my jpacs/ipacs from Ultimarc.com in the UK. It was cheaper to get them from there than OZstick., and it helps buying from the dude who makes them. I had a chip go faulty on one of my Jpacs and Andy sent a replacement over in a jiffy.

I'm trying some of the Japanese Sanwa gear out in the cocktail i'm building. I really loving them, but they cost a bit. You can also get them in Aussy, although the range is not as good as from the US, or Japan.

So it really comes down to what sort of gear you like....and can afford :D

PS. I always loved MK, but i was kinda crap at it......so i stuck to street fighter

oh wow, so you've been through your share of builds already then?

I'll consider buying direct from ultimarc then :)

it's worth having a look at least

In Aussie there's   http://www.gamedude.com.au/arcade/   which is where i'm trying to get my t-moulding from, i found out today that they only ship to NZ on special request, but they have some nice stuff.

here is where i bought my MCA joys and buttons   http://www.bigtop.com.au/index.php?cPath=67&page=2

here's another place. I haven't bought anything from these guys but they have some good gear    https://www.arcadegamingaustralia.com.au

and i'm sure there's plenty more. It pays to have a good  look around.

Have fun.
