Galaga History ....
« on: September 05, 2008, 04:19:10 pm »
Is Galaga 'fast shoot' a legitimate game, or is it a hacked? Like playing Defender with slow mutants.

Was it ever an arcade game? I can double (quadruple) my score on fast shoot Galaga, but am I kidding myself!

The dilemma is killing me!

It was a "mod chip" hack sold to operators as a way to change and enhance the game. Just like how there were mod chips to change the speed of pacman, etc...  Not with Midway's permission.

NO MORE!!

Thanks Ray, I never knew that ...

So I guess my scores are kind of legit --- what year was this - how long after Galaga's main release?

It sort of became legit though, as the 20th anniversary reunion game has fast shoot as an option in the machine setup (as well as speeding up ms pac). There's also a sequence you can do to toggle it after inserting a quarter (left right left right up up up fire). If it's rapid fire, it'll make it normal, and vice versa. This also toggles slow/fast for Ms Pac-man (and the Pac-man easter egg, which can be selected by doing up up up down down down left right left right left)

Glad you asked this, and glad to hear Ray's response. I was at the Ground Kontrol classic arcade in Portland today (awesome arcade btw), and played a pac man cocktail that was fast. When I got home, I went into the dip switch settings in mame to see if there was such a setting (and no, there isn't), so I was wondering what was up with that.

I'm interested to see (maybe someone knows off hand) if there are clones of pac man (or galaga) that have these hacks.
My Collection: Mame cab, 38 dedicated vids, pin, skeeball, coin op air hockey table, Ice Cold Beer, Megatouch, 2 token machines, and payphone (VAPS, pics at Arcade Crusade)

Add Ambience to your mame cab setup

Mame has the Pac speedup under the Cheats setup. you have to have a cheats.dat file if you don't already.
Some clones have pac-speedup integrated; sometimes it's a button you have to push.

I'm not much of a fan of the anniversary edition for the rapid fire thing, that and the continue? at the end of the game.
It's all a matter of personal preference, but that's part of the fun, to me, to hit the button rapidly..
If you order a pizza, put 1 quarter in their Galaga and the pizza's done before you are, you might be a video game junkie.. if you offer to tweak the crt , definitely.
