Rotary Joy confirmation
« on: September 03, 2008, 09:26:47 pm »
Have read quite a bit about this and would like some quick conformation please, i am going to add the Happ Mechanical Joystick and Ultimarc Rotary joystick interface to my CP. I am running mame .123 with mameah v1.62. I am using a kew wiz for my current joysticks and buttons, early version, not sure which.

Is this all i need to play Heavy Barrel, Ikari Warriers etc...what about buttons. Do i need to add 2 specific buttons next to the rotary joystick or use the ones i have and just map them in? Also does the interface just hook up to the usb and away we go...no need to go into my keywiz for rotary joy or new buttons?

Hook the microswitches on the rotary joy to your keywiz the same as other joys for direction.
You can 'double up' with your existing player one inputs (hook then to the same inputs on the keywiz)
if you want to.  Some people do this when they hook up a dedicated 4-way joy. It saves remapping
a joy for the 4-way games (in your case the rotary games). Also saves on keywiz inputs if you
have lots of joys/buttons already.

Hook the wires from the rotary switch on the bottom of the joy to the ultimarc rotary adapter.

Use your existing buttons that are hooked to the keywiz...add a cou[ple more next to the rotary joy
if you like - if there's room on your panel and free inouts on your keywiz.

edit:  what the hell are inouts?  .....meant free inputs.

But you don't have to.  The Ultimarc Rotary Joystick Interface translates the rotation of the stick into keypresses, so you don't need buttons to rotate.  It is another USB keyboard AFAIK.

You might have to set up mame a little: set analog speed of the "positional" (the input type mame uses for the rotary part) inputs to zero (0) for each of the games.  Also you might need to remap the game's rotate left/right "buttons" to the keys the URJI outputs.  Search for posts here for more info on what others did.

I should have been more specific - I meant as 'action' buttons for fire, bomb, etc.
