CRT Monitor changing color when I rotate it? WTF?
« on: September 02, 2008, 04:03:23 pm »
Hi all,

Well, I managed to grab a great deal on 2 CRT computer monitors for my next two cab builds on Craigslist.  $25 each - 1 NEC 21" MultiSyunc XP21 and 1 Mitsubishi 22" Diamond Pro 2020u.  Not bad, but now I'm beginning to think otherwise.
:badmood:

They work perfectly, that is, when then are orientated normally (horizontally) as they were meant to be.  However, when I physically rotate the monitors for a vertical orientation (either left of right), the colors change! It's as if some sort of magnet inside is altering the colors.  **Groan**  I bought them for use in a Vertical Build, but now I'm not sure if I can even use them due to this problem!   :dunno

Has anyone ever experienced this before?  Is there any way of getting around this?  Or are my hopes to use these monitors in my vertical cabs doomed?  :hissy:

Here are some pics:

Any insight would be great.

You need to degauss once you rotate the monitors.

(Especially if you rotated them while they were on...  you basically turned them through a large magnetic field)

Agreed ....
In other words - Degauss the monitor AFTER you have rotated it.

If there is an OSD menu option then you can do it from there.
If not, then you will have to turn it off, let it cool a bit, THEN turn it back on.

Yeah...heh...in terms of problems when building these beasties, this doesn't even qualify as a problem.  You just need to degauss.  If the monitor doesn't have a degauss feature built in, use a plug-in electric drill.  There are many examples on this site alone, or use your favorite search engine and look for "degauss".

Thanks for the input.  I'll give it a shot. **EDIT:   Yep!  That worked.  I rotated it and then just turned it on.  The degaussing feature kicked in since they were both cold and all is good on both monitors.  Thanks guys! **

Also, which way do people normally rotate their monitors?  My current arcade monitor (mounted horizontal) has the Samsung label on the left side.  So basically I'm assuming that the monitor would be rotated to the right physically for a horizontal setup so that the label is upright.  Is this correct or does it even matter?  (MAME does either one).

Welcome in the Earth magnetic field! Monitors have to compensate for this, and do this in the normal position.
Fun thing to try: DHL your TV from Europe/US to Australia, put it upside down and turn it on. Perfect image. Turn it normal: garbled colours!

I'm surprised in the time you've been here, you haven't come across a thread where some noob is similarly worrying. Actually, I'm surprised you haven't just for the hell of it turned a PC monitor on its side to see the aspect. I did that years ago. And got worried. And degaussed (because when I got the monitor, my first with my first PC, I went through all the options in the OSD and tried them out, and figured in this case it might help it).
