Power supply issue/fix
« on: August 30, 2008, 04:31:27 pm »
I recently came into ownership of an arcade cabinet.  Found it free on craigslist, and it's a Street Fighter II conversion. =)  The 'seller', or I guess I should say 'giver' stated that the machine no longer powers up.

I powered the machine on, and got absolutely no response what-so-ever. No noise, no 'whirr' of the monitor starting up, no fan in the power supply (if any), no crackle, nada.. So that means it's either a bad power supply, or a bad fuse.. but the problem is I don't know where to look for fuses, i've looked all over the machine and I can't seem to find the little 'box' that the fuse or fuses would be in. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Peale, I'd love to oblige but unfortunately my phone camera is a POS, and I don't have a digicam either.

There should be a line fuse right after the power cord and before the power supply---- at least for safety's sake.  If not it is probably iside the power supply case, that is assuming that you have a generic power supply with this being a conversion. Does the neck of your monitor glow?

Not that I can see. I hear and see absolutely no activity when hitting the power switch.  I'll check again though.

OK I just checked, no glow in the monitor.  I can see where the power cord comes in and then splits off into the wiring, but I can't see any fuse boxes.  The weird thing is that it looks like I have two switches in different places, both of which have tape or something 'blocking' any use from the switch.  Here's a picture of one. Again, sorry for the poor quality from my cameraphone.

I doubt it would be in there, but I figured I'd mention it just in case.

It should be noted that the person I got the cab from stated the machine worked perfectly one day, then it did exactly what it's doing now the next day.

edit: also, this machine is of poor design.  The power supply, and board are at the very bottom of the cab, while the back of the cab has a non-removable section of particle board. So I'm basically bending INTO the cab at all times. :(  oh well, it was free. I can't complain.

Those switches are interlock switches.
If either of them is not engaged the machine will not power on.
So it would also be worth checking those..... they should both be pushed in OR pulled all the way out. (those are usually two position switches)

As for the fuse:
Do you have a large silver looking power supply box where at least part of the AC (power cord) wiring goes in to it?
There should be a fuse down in there. (maybe inside)

Not a technician . . . . just a DIY'er.

UN. BE. LIEV. ABLE.

I still haven't found the fuse, but guess what? I looked at both of those interlocking switches, and apparently one of them was in the 'off' (or maybe on) position. I moved it, tried it and "BZZZRRRRROOOM..."  I'm now playing Street Fighter II.  Incredible.  Oh well, I bought a multimeter, and don't need it after all but I'll keep it for future reference.  Thanks for the help everyone.
