WG U-5000 / Nothing Happens?!? w/pics
« on: August 24, 2008, 03:08:45 pm »
Hello, I had a WG 25" monitor in my cab when moving it back to my home after lending it to a friend for his kids B-day party. Somehow while moving it we cracked the tube at the neckboard. When I disposed of the old tube, i forgot to remove the neckboard .  So i purchased another used tube, U-5000 chassis, and neckboard.  I decided to use the chassis i just purchased because it was already with the tube so i figured they would work fine together. When i hooked up and plugged in, there was a light, fast ticking sound coming from the monitor. Figuring it needs a cap kit or flyback or other stuff, i decided just to use my old chassis since i knew it worked fine before i cracked the tube. So swap out the guts and put the old chassis in and try to fire it up.

Nothing, no static, no neck glow, no picture, no sound, no life. Checked the fuse and it was fine. The chassis had been working with no problems before i broke the old tube, i cannot figure out why not working with the new tube? I guessed tube compatibility but the tube i purchased came with the same chassis board. Any suggestions would be great, i miss playing on my Cab  :hissy:.

P.S.
I wanted to replace the flyback on the original chassis because it had two of its wires soldered and spliced because they were cut accidentally. I know the should not be spliced because of the voltages, but i had to do something to make sure that the tube worked. I just never got around to replacing, but i don't see that being a cause to the problem as it was working for months before i broke the tube.

Thanks all

That's not a U5000 chassis in your hand.  I think that's a K7400.

Ticking can be caused by a number of things.  One of the more common is too high B+.  Try turning it down a hair.

Exactly what I thought when I saw the chassis pic.

That's a 7400 series chassis..... "similar" to the U5000, but yours is missing WAY to many components to actually be a full dual mode U5000.

tag on the crt indicates it is a 27" . picushion correction will be needed for this tube  .
there is a filter cap (33-47 uF @50-63v ) between the "big filter cap " and the heatsink for the smps .
this cap is the b+ filter for the pwm ic .  a faulty cap here can cause a "doa" symptom.
a shorted hot can cause the ticking symptom - so, check ur h out xistor
