is PAYPAL not making enough money?
« on: August 20, 2008, 02:24:02 am »

i always seem to have trouble logging into paypal. my theory is they need to upgrade/expand their servers. i think they should save up and buy another commodore 64 to help take the load off their first one...

I always have trouble with paypal, but I thought it's just because they suck.  I never thought they might be overtaxing their commodore 64.

I called their tech support and they said they added some RAM to handle the increased load. Apparently, someone forgot to tell them they needed to get a new power supply. Of course, their CEO did bid on a new one on eBay, but decided the safest way to pay was via PayPal. Since PayPal sucks ass....

Do I really need to continue on this circular discussion?

I have no problems logging in. I think it's your famous internet service, danny. You're in AUS, right?

i think it surpasses the gheyness of my innernetz. after all, i am able to buy something on ebay easily enough, but when i go to review purchase and then click 'continue' it times out while trying to connect to paypal. i just have to keep trying, and hold my tongue just right before it works. last purchase i had to give up for the night and try the next day, where apon it was still craptastic. then just periodically keep trying until an open door at paypal HQ lets a cooling breeze drift over the C64...

Don't nock the old commodore machines. I remember reading an article in Compute Gazette, where a US based nuclear power plant used VIC-20's to control the critical aspects of the plant operation (such as rod depth, and coolant flow). For all I know, they are still using those same VIC20's  ;D (and it wouldnt suprise me one bit, considering how robust those damn things were...)

I've used paypal for years and never had any issues.  Their site has always been really fast for me.  Maybe it is just an Australian problem.  :dunno

A Vic-20 and a C64 aren't the same computer.

Don't forget, the SID package in the C64 was hardware - the software simply told the chip what to do.

I don't have any big problems with logging in, but I do find it comical that whenever I first log in I get a screen that says something like, "Logging in.  If you see this page for more than five seconds hit refresh and try again."  If I followed the instructions I would never log into PayPal because it always absolutely always every single time without fail takes more than five seconds to get past that screen.  Usually more like ten.

I do periodically have problems with Paypal doing ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- things like freezing funds with no good reason, or having a transaction decline when I create one of those single-use credit cards even though I have the money in my account.

If they'd upgrade from C64 to an Atari 130XE they'd be fine.
