Arcade Addiction Marquee
« on: August 18, 2008, 09:36:41 am »
So here's the marquee I've designed for my cab. I don't have any real artistic talent, so I decided to go with a simple idea - create an epic battle between a bunch of classic games. I've always been a fan of William stuff, so most of their classics are represented. All in all, there are objects from 13 different games - mostly space themed.

To create the objects "game characters", I used mame screen captures, then increased the resolution to 300dpi and enlarged about 1000%. For each game I created a palette of objects - if anyone is interested in these, I could post the Photoshop files.

For the battle, I played with scale a bit, and mixed everything up. My family got a kick out of guessing which characters came from which games and what was wrong.

All in all, it's a bit busy, but I like it.

I like it alot.  Can you explain your process of capturing the images a bit more.  I am looking to get some pixel images for my own project and am having a hard time getting pixel pictures from some games I want.  I have not used MAME to capture images so I am not familiar with the process.  I think I can do something similar to what you did to get the type of images I am looking for.

I'm not a Photoshop expert and there may be a better way - but here's how I did it. From mame, use F12 to do the screen caps. The files end up in the snap folder. They are very low res. I opened the .png files in Photoshop, then used the "Image Resize" function to change the resolution to 300dpi and increase the image size - the trick here is to make sure the "Resample Image" value is set to "Nearest Neighbor". That's it.
