Video Card PROBLEM.....HELP PLEASE !!!!
« on: August 05, 2008, 11:15:09 pm »
I have an old Compaq computer (PIII ??) that I picked up at a Rummage Sale recently.  It had Windows 2000 on it, but I chose to put Windows 98 on it instead....like my other MAME cabinets.  After the Win98 install, the monitor ended up only being 16 color....which won't let me run MAME.  (The original video card drivers were erased and Win98 chose the wrong driver for the Dell monitor I'm using.)

My problem.....I don't know what driver I need.  I went the www.hp.com website and downloaded several drivers, but nothing works.   :banghead:  ANY IDEAS??!?!

Thanks,
MAME Nut

Crack it open and see what's inside.

It's not the monitor you need drivers for..... it's the video card chipset you need drivers for.

I'm assuming this PC has onboard video that you are trying to use ?

Any idea what model of Compaq that unit is?
Or what motherboard it has?

Sorry.....not sure where to look for the Video Card.  I can't find a model number anywhere, only a S/N number.

Can you tell me what to look for??  Or, should I post a picture??

Thanks,
MameNut

You have to open it up.  Look for the card that your monitor plugs into.  That's your video card.

If it's on the motherboard itself, check out and see if there are any identifying marks on it silkscreened somewhere.

Pearle,

It is opened.  I just can't ID the video card.  I put a card in about 10 years ago...and it was a "card".  This does not appear to have a card.

See pictures below.

Who the heck is Pearle?

You have an onboard chipset.  I can see one of them (the southbridge I think) and it's an Intel chip.  I don't know what the northbridge is (it's covered by the green heatsink), but there's a good bet it's an Intel one as well.

If this was made by a major manufacturer (Dell, Compaq) what's the model number?

there should be a board number in white on the motherboard write down those numbers and letters and do a google search and your board should show.

once you find what board it is do another google search for the motherboard drivers.

I doubt it.  It's likely one of the other chips on the motherboard.  I can't see it clearly enough to make it out.  It should stand out as one of the major (usually) sound chip manufacturers.  ESS is one such manufacturer, Yamaha is another.  So is Creative Labs.

I'm guessing from a little research that the mother board is from a Evo D300v or similar model.

So try these drivers for your audio:
AC97 Audio Drivers

Main List of Drivers for that model:
Ala Carte Drivers

Let us know how it goes.
