Match.com
« on: July 29, 2008, 03:10:05 pm »
Grr . . . My wife's debit card number was used for Match.com and Lavalife (a similar service from what I can tell).  Called and had all the charges reversed, but based on how the charges showed up on my statement the Match.com person I talked to said that they originated from outside the country.  I contacted Match.com's international dept. and they will not tell me in what country the charges originated unless I send them a subpoena.  So ---smurfing--- retarded.  They say that they do not want to compromise the privacy of their members.  This is asinine for a number of reasons:

1- It was MY credit card.  The only privacy concerns with giving out information about where it was used are MY privacy concerns.
2- Even if they are concerned with protecting the privacy of the member who stole my credit card, telling me what ---smurfing--- country he/she lives in doesn't tell me anything other than that Match.com has members living in that country.

It's so irritating, because I am not going to get a subpoena, but I'd like to get an idea of how my credit card number was compromised.  The person would have had to know my card number, expiration date and CVV number.  I make very few international transactions, though.  Just knowing the country of origin would probably tell me exactly where my card number was stolen and I could stop doing business with that company (and let them know that one of their employees is stealing credit card numbers).

So obnoxious.

Its also possible that a company from within the States took your number and gave it to a friend or relative in the other country.

So your wife routed the credit card through a different country.

I say it's time for her to go.

Seriously though, that's pretty messed up. I try to keep my debit card off the internet and only use Visa gift cards for online purchases.

Hope you get it resolved.

I'd like to point out that he had the problem with a credit card and and not a debit card.  Someone who doesn't know any better is going to read that and think you can charge back a debit purchase.

I was under the impression that since the funds were from your bank account you couldn't.

Was it a visa card? Nevermind apparently some banks offer limited charge back now (ie withint 45 days or such).  Good to know I guess.

Congrats. You've just now discovered that more and more companies have weird notions about privacy. Someone could steal your entire financial protfolio, credit card, debit, checking, everything and companies will refuse to talk to you unless you have one key piece of information that you obviously don't have.

It's a hell of a lot easier to get power billed under someone elses name at a house I have indirect ownership of than it is to have my own checking account information removed from a companies file for an account I don't own. Go figure.

Was it a visa card?

I quit using my debit card (Visa) online because some strange charges appeared. The bank took the charges off and put the money back (FDIC, man).

They cover all sorts of things now apparently.

Couldn't you report them to consumer affairs since they are harboring and protecting someone who committed credit card theft?

Sure, if you wanted to wait 6 years for someone to look at the ticket and maybe get back to you in 10 years.

So, now that we've sorted out the cock and bull story, is your wife looking to hook up?

Yea I stick with credit cards online.  I won't use my debit card.  It's easier to get the dough back with the credit card companies.

That's actually VISA's protection.  That little logo on the card means access to the network for the bank and protection for you.  I don't think the FDIC guarantees protection against fraud (other than the bank defrauding you), but if they did I certainly don't like the thought of the forms and hurdles I'd have to deal with to get money back from the gov'mint.
