Need help exporting .max to .x
« on: July 28, 2008, 04:58:08 pm »
Hello,

I am trying to convert some of the .max cabinet models from the 3D Arcade project to the .X file format.

I tried downloading the .max model for the Phoenix cabinet from http://3darcade.mameworld.net/models/models.htm, and I was able to load it into 3DS MAX version 9. It warned me that the .max file was from an older version of 3DS max, so I saved it in the newer format. The phoenix.max file displays correctly within the 3DS Max program.

Next, I tried to use a 3DS Max to .X exporter plugin. The one I use was the "kW X-porter".

Finally I tried to view the resulting phoenix.X file with dxviewer. It looks like the textures loaded okay, but the mesh is all messed up. The wireframe view doesn't look any better.

I would appreciate any help in getting the dxviewer to display the .x file correctly. The kW plugin is supposed to work, is there another plugin out there that will work?

TIA,
Cakemeister

I've done this before but I can't remember how, I'll have to have a look through some old stuff and see if I can figure out how I did it.

Howard and I have been wanting to convert the models over to .X format for a long time. It's a shame that most of them are in W3D as I've figured they are impossible to convert, but I do know it's possible to convert the max ones. They come out okay, and you've probably seen one in the Razor video.

It would be great if we could get a pack together with all models in X format.

I'm also investigating Collada format, maybe that would be better than X as far as cross-platform compatibility goes.

Thanks for your help.
