Hantarex MTC-9000: cannot see text on a white background
« on: July 27, 2008, 06:10:17 pm »
Hi guys,

I hope someone can help with this.

I have an Electrocoin Goliath cab with a Hantarex MTC-9000 arcade monitor. It is impossible to read text when it's on a white background, although with any other colour background it's fine. I've attached some screenshots so you can see what I mean.

What could be causing this? It's almost like the brightness is too high but none of the pots adjust that (one of them does contrast but that doesn't help).

Anyone shed any light or know how to fix it I'd really appreciate it.

Many thanks in advance everyone.

its overdriving the colour signal
almost certainly not an actual monitor fault, most likely to do with the video card and software
now whether it is too little or too much signal-thats the question
there are also colour adjustments on the neck card and the screen volts on the flyback

That and you're trying to read tiny text on a lo-res background.  Boost your font size.

Yep that's got it. I'm running an ArcadeVGA plugged into a JPAC; I  turned the colour brightness down and it's (kind of) fine now - except that I can't edit the colour saturation because it's not detected the fact that a screen is attached and everything is greyed out. I think that's a conversation I need to have with Andy Warne though (unless you know how to fix it ...? :) )

Many thanks for your help Grantspain
Jon

not 100% sure but to me it looks like there is too high a signal, have you bypassed the jpac straight to the avga as the mtc9000 should run o.k without any need for the jpac amplifier
tbh its a guess but my gut instincts tend to be correct

I don't know how to do that. The Hantarex has a blue 4-pin plug coming off it (looks like a PSU molex) which plugs straight into the JAMMA harness (and another going to the PSU), which in turn is connected to the JAMMA edge connector which the JPAC is plugged into. I have no idea how to go about changing that into VGA without going through JPAC. Would I be able to run through JPAC without amplification?

The main issue I have regarding the colour saturation (now that I have confirmed that as the problem) is that the ArcadeVGA doesn't detect that the screen is attached. Is this something you could help with? When I plug in my VGA PC monitor together with the Hantarex I only have a display on the VGA side and can't clone the display on it; when I have the Hantarex plugged in on it's own, when I go to the Displays tab in the ATI settings everything is greyed out like no screen is connected. This is the conversation I was going to have with Andy Warne but obviously if you can shed any light Grantspain I'd be very grateful for your comments.

Thanks again in advance!

Wow you don't hang about do you! I only just posted that!!

Thanks again for all your help Grantspain. I've spoken to Andy and arranged to give him a ring tomorrow night (he only lives up the road from me) so hopefully I should get it sorted.

Cheers
