LAPTOP PROBLEMS!!!
« on: July 19, 2008, 09:46:38 pm »
i have a laptop with no floppy drive and a dead cd drive and its old so it wont boot to a usb drive. well i tried to partition the drive to make a backup drive with partition commander. it did its thing and when it restarted it went blank, it does nothing now.  If i take the laptop hard drive and put it in my desktop (i have the adapter) is there a way i can throw files on it so it will boot up so i can reinstall xp?  i copied the disk to my desktop so i know to throw it on the laptop drive when its connected.  any help would be greatly appreciated!

I think I'd leave the HDD in your PC and install XP on the drive.  Uninstall as many drivers and things as you can and get it as bare bones as possible (ie, set your video resolution to 640x480, 16 color) and then move the drive back to your laptop and cross your fingers you don't BSOD before you're able to boot it all the way up and get on the network or USB device.
Trying to boot into safe mode may help that first time.

Copy over any critical (video, network, usb) drivers to the drive as possible before putting it back in the laptop, so you'll have them handy when XP asks for them.

Ive recently can into a similar issue using a toshiba protoge 3500 that has no internal floppy and cdrom. I took out the HD and installed XP then put the new drive back in.. Then installed all necessary drivers then took the drive back out and used GHOST to make a 1:1 copy.  If it ever does this again a restore will only take a few minutes.

:)
