Just got a PS3...
« on: July 15, 2008, 01:40:03 pm »
What games are "must-haves"?  I know I'm probably going to get a copy of MGS4, but other than that, what's good?  I have COD4 already.  Have my first BluRay movie in que on Netflix, I'm interested to see the difference compared to just upconverting DVD.

I really liked Uncharted.  Let me know if you would like to borrow it and I'll drop it in the mail.

btw - What model did you end up getting?

What's uncharted?  I might be interested.

Not sure what model I got...  my brother gave it to me.  It is fully backwards compatible with PSX and PS2 games, though...   ;D

The same brother that gave you the PSP?  Nice guy!  ;D  Anyway, it sounds like the 60gb model.  I have the 40 which only has ps1 compatibility (all models do).

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is similar to Tomb Raider, I'd say.  Well written and acted.  Plays out like a movie.  Very cool.

Uncharted is fantastic, but short.  Borrowing it would be a great idea, but you should definitely play it.  Metal Gear Solid 4 is an absolute must if you like the other games.. even if you don't like em its still worth it.

Resistance is good, though I don't even have it yet.

Ratchet and Clank
is a must if you like platformers at all, and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue is worth it if you like racers even if it is just a glorified demo (and it is)

Motorstorm is ok and you can pick it up for $20 used now.

COD 4 is great but seems like they forgot the other half of the game I sat down and played it through in a couple hours.

Cool... I'll look into checking out those games.  I'm definately going to buy MGS4.  I've been really looking forward to that one for a while!

Anyone know if the PS3 BluRay remote can control streaming video (I've been streaming using Tversity on my PC)?

I just got an Xbox360 and an HD TV to go along with it. But now I'm debating buying a PS3 since the HD-DVD format is dead and the PS3 is the cheapest future-proof Blu-Ray player on the market.

I feel greedy, since I've never been a multi-platform guy, but damn - as a gamer, it doesn't make sense to buy a plain, ol' vanilla Blu-ray set-top player, when you can have an upgradable one.

At least, that's what I've been telling the wife.

That's becoming one of the best reasons to choose Playstation these days, unfortunately.  They're ditching backward compatibility and losing exclusives right and left (first Assassin's Creed, Devil May Cry, GTA, now Final Fantasy).  Now the Xbox 360 has Netflix streaming.  I switched from Netflix to Blockbuster.com because I loved being able to have my cake and eat it too (instant gratification by swapping movies at my local Blockbuster).  I always loved Netflix, but Blockbuster just offered something Netflix couldn't.  But I gotta admit, streaming directly to my TV is even more instant than access to the local video store.

I won't be getting either in the near future, but I have to admit that Microsoft is doing a pretty impressive job.  If I were buying today I'd still get a PS3, but I'm not sure that will be the case when I can actually afford to buy one.

Although...I'm holding out hope for a Blu-Ray drive for the 360. It just seems inevitable at this point.
The only exclusive that would make it hard for me to pass up the PS3 would be Shadow of the Colossus 2.

So pray with me that Sony loses the rights to that game as well.   ;D

Now the Xbox 360 has Netflix streaming.

Sony’s cutting out the middle man.  They have their own downloadable movie rental thingy.

They claim the download is streaming and you only have to wait a minute into the download before you can start watching the movie. You can also transfer the movie to a PSP, which might get me to buy a PSP before my next European(long flight) vacation.

The PS3 news conference at E3 was interesting.

There’s some 256 players war game coming out that sounds insane.

Is Sony's downloadable rental thing a monthly fee where you can download as many movies or tv shows as you want?

And of course Microsoft has to announce this one month after I bought a Netflix Player  :P

Xbox already has rental of movies and TV shows which you can start watching while its still downloading, with a much larger library than Sony if I remember correctly.  Unless you mean Sony has you pay one flat rate then access as much content as you want.

The netflix is in addition to their current movie/tv show content, nearly doubling their accessible content.  As well, Xbox users will pay no additional costs to stream netflix.

Though admittedly, last time I checked the Netflix streaming content wasnt all that large, but still, having two companies expand your online options is a pretty schweet future.

I'd vote for GTA 4 and Race Driver GRID. While Grand Tourismo 5 Prologue looks seriously impressive, I didn't like playing it.

I think he said it was 2 bucks a movie.  I haven't tried it, but since I still pay 4.99 per movie at Block Buster’s, 2 bucks sounds pretty good.

I rent about one movie every other month in the fall/winter and only if there was a movie I really wanted to see I'll rent it in the summer.

Yeah, Xbox has already had rental stuff for a long time.  The Netflix thing is mostly awesome for people who already subscribe to Netflix (or anyone else who rents lots of movies).  At no extra cost Xbox 360 owners suddenly have unlimited access to Netflix's entire download library.  Currently that's approximately 10,000 titles, but it is expanding quickly (Netflix plans to cease DVD rentals and move into an all-download service in the future and they are gearing up for that changeover).  Like the Xbox and PS3 rentals, these movies stream so you can basically start watching them immediately, on demand.

BTW, PS3 movie rentals are $2.99 or $5.99 depending on whether you rent it in standard definition or high definition.  Episodes of TV shows are $1.99 to rent.

TV shows are purchases, not rentals.  You can hang onto them as long as you like, but they will only work on one device so you can't download it to the PS3 and watch it on a PSP.

I see.  I was reading about the DRM.  Pretty lame.  Anything you purchase on the PSP is stuck there.  It can't be transferred to the PS3 to watch on the big screen.  And while standard def. content can be transferred to the PSP, if you buy a high def. movie it can only be watched on the PS3.  That doesn't make much sense to me, but whatever.  I would never use the service anyway.  I get more movies than I can keep up with through Blockbuster.com for practically nothing.

Yep, Xbox has had the movie rental tv purchase thing since the beginning.

HarumaN, I have installed linux.  It isn't worth it right now since there is no video acceleration, only software rendering.

As for games, since I also have a 360 I get most games for that since the multiplayer system is better.  I have Hot Shots Golf, UT3, and Warhawk on the PS3.  All good games.

Rock Band.

If you have xbox 360 though it has more downloadable songs.

I have Rock Band for my ps3 because it is in the play room.  The xbox 360 is in the living room so I don't want guitar and drum controllers laying around the house.

The wii is out in the play room too because I need room for flailing arms.

lolwut? If you're refering to the OXM disc "360 exclusives," (3 songs which were not that great anyway) they were released to PS3 users via the Rock Band Store months ago...

That said, I definitely agree, Rock Band is a fantastic game, especially in a party situation.  Rock Band 2 (October 19th) will just extend that play value even further.

Soul Calibur 4 just came out, too, and it looks to be a winner if you like fighting games.  I'm going to wait for Tekken 6, personally...

If you or your friends like singing American Idol Encore is a fun group game.

I can't sing to save my life, but I still enjoy it.

A friend of mine has it and we play it all the time, if there wasn’t a AIE2 coming out I’d buy AIE now.
