Marvel VS Capcom 2 Dream Edition (MORE PICS)
« on: July 13, 2008, 03:59:42 am »
Hey everybody!

I'm John D, I just wanted to contribute to this wonderful site. I've gotten some great advice in the past from other members. I was planning to build a Mame cab but decided to go that route in my second build. This would be my first Naomi rig and I plan to make the cabinet from scratch. I look forward in hearing all your comments and suggestion.

My rig:

Naomi 1 motherboard x2 , Capcom I/O board x2, Marvel VS Capcom 2, Power Stone, brand new custom Jamma harness, brand new Jamma Board kick harness, brand new Happ PSU, brand new Ultimarc translucent LED pushbuttons, brand new competition Happ Joysticks, brand new Happ pushbuttons, brand new Happs coin entry system.

Very nice start on the hardware part. But why two systems?

thanks !

I got a good deal on the Power Stone kit but what I really wanted was the Marvel VS Capcom 2 game and it wasn't available at the time. I was hunting around for the game and I didin't know that damn thing was so sought after which drove the price so high. So I found a seller but he was selling the whole kit and it was a good deal too so I pulled the trigger. After I hook up everything and get it running, I may consider selling some parts to recover some money that I invested.

Very nice score...If MvC2 wasn't so over priced I would pick up an arcade kit myself   I'm looking forward to see how your project turns out. Hopefully, when you start playing all the characters will be unlocked otherwise you will have QUITE a time unlocking them all :).  Good luck.

it took me a while to find one for a decent price and I ended up buying two kits just to save money. as for the hidden characters, there's a code that allows you to unlock them without going through  the prcoess of earning it yourself.

If I remember correctly MvC2 used a level system, and it went off of the amount of coins inserted. Every other fighter (by Namco in particular) used time release.

I'm assuming you will be using an LCD display?  What size are you going to use, and what paint scheme have you decided on? Looking good so far, I see you got a Dewalt work table and got your items from Home Depot so obviously you have good enough sense to use some of the best tools for the job.  :applaud:

Just gotta say I saw that one pic on the balcony and think its really cool when people build cabs in somewhat difficult circumstances. I originally really wanted a cockpit cab for flight sims in addition to MAME and always used the excuse of being in an apartment not to go through with building anything. I was only on a 3rd floor and had a large balcony, way easier circumstances than some people are building are under.

I went insane when I got a house to make up for it, and now have a garage you can't even move in because there's so much arcade junk out there  ;) , but props to you for just going ahead with it, and it's looking great.

Yes, I plan to go LCD. I have 30 inch and a 24 inch LCD monitor, I'll run the smaller one and see how it looks. As for paint, I'm going for a nice solid black with red t-moldings all around. I bought all my tools and supplies from Home Depot. I really did my research on tools to buy but I think I got carried away on the lil stuff. This is my first wood working project, I think I'm a lil bit over my head on this one lol :) The nerve wrecking part about this build is making sure I don't screw up, it's costing me a lot of money just for the wood I'm using for this project.

Thanks!

hahaha yeah, I'm at the 16th floor of our condo and working on the balcony aint the easiest place to do a wood project. I also have to do as much work as I can in the day, I really don't wan't to piss off the condo management. I didn't think building a cab could be so time consuming, I was hoping to finish it this weekend but it looks like it's not gonna happen :(

I wouldn't worry about screwing up. You sweat the small stuff a lot while you are working, only to realize it wasn't really a big deal later. I'm in the process of building my first, and it is also my first "real" woodworking project (shop class doesn't really count). As long as you take your time and pay attention to what you are doing it will come out great (a healthy, or not so much, obsession with this place helps too).

As for it taking longer than you expect, I think everyone can relate. I work on it pretty much all weekend every weekend and it has taken me about two months to (almost) get to the painting stage. It's totally worth it though, when you can look at something and say "I built that" ;D

rock on man, it's looking great

Mine is going well, it's been hot out lately so it's getting harder to work on. I'm doing the control panel last, so I don't get stuck in testing  ;) thanks for asking!

Your control box looks great. I like the way the real wood looks, I cheaped out and used mdf. My next one (of course there will be a next one :P) will probably be one similar to yours. Can't wait to see it finished.

Thanks!

Looks like your project is coming along pretty nicely! Good luck! :)

The sad part though, is I'll bet it was easier for you to find the MVC2 Naomi board than it is to find the PS2 version... :(

Good to hear your project is doin well :)

I was going to use MDF but decided to go this route since it looks better and it's not as heavy. I have this week to finish it off. I'm having people over this weekend and I'd like to have it ready.

Actually, it's the other way around :)

The game is going for atleast $275 and up. It would be cheaper to go down the PS2 version but it's not the same.

LOL  you must be patient grasshopper...I'm sure there has to be site on the great WEB that can help you.  What exactly are you having issues with? I know there are a few guys on here with NAOMI setups, and I'm pretty sure they will be more than willing to help (esp. considering since you own MvC2.) You will get through this minor set back no doubt.

I finally got this whole Naomi thing figured out :)  I ran the MVSC2 on the 24 inch and it didn't look good, I tried a 22 inch and it looked a lot better. here's some pics of my progress so far. I really wanna get this thing done with, so excited already to play  the game the proper way.

The wood looks like it'd be nice stained, but it really all depends on what he's going for. If you want something that the wife / girlfriend / mom / room mate will approve of, sometimes stain is a good way to go. But if you're going for the "arcade authentic" look, your safest bet is usually to paint it black and buy some good side art decals.

Anyway, it's looking very good. MVC2 is totally worth building a cab for, and you're fortunate enough to have the actual Naomi hardware. A lot of other blokes (like me) will be stuck playing it on NullDC for a very long time.

The Naomi hardware set is very sophisticated, because it was essentially a Dreamcast with the addition of a flash memory cartridge slot. It takes a bit more work to get it running than say, the CPS2 chipset (or even CPS3). And also, I don't think there's much likelihood that Mamedev is going to fully integrate it, or at least not in the near future. After all, look at how crappy games that run on PS1 hardware run on Mame compared to Zinc. There is a seperate Naomi emulator in production that is showing a lot of promise, but it's going to have some very hefty system specs (probably a lot more than NullDC's). For most people, NullDC will probably be the most practical way to play MVC2 for a good while.

I was planning to paint it black with red t-moldings all around. I also have some nice red LED pushbuttons and joystick. Looking at it right now, it wouldn;t look that bad if I stain it but I would be knocking off the idea from Knievel.

Looks great, as-is. Considered stain?

It's my favorite fighting game actually. I remember going to tournaments for it and kicking ass lol. I think i'm doin alright so far, it is my first time making a actual cabinet, I did everything in my balcony and I'm sure my neighbours hate me for it.

I guess I could share my plans :) I would have to get my stuff in writing first since I was just
making it up as I go along.

WOW!

That cabinet looks amazing.  I have been looking for some plans for a "slim" LCD cabinet.  Care to share yours?

I really like the look and would like you to know the dimensions.  So if you get the chance PM me and let me know.  I am thinking about building a cabinet that would use either a 19" or 20" LCD.  That seems to be the biggest 4:3 ratio one I can find.  You mentioned 24" and 22" are these widescreen?  If not where are you finding them?  Are they TV monitors with VGA 640x480 resolution?
