No green color on my monitor
« on: July 02, 2008, 11:35:25 pm »
I bought a game today and it has no green color on the game itself.  The previous owner said it probably needs a cap kit.  I opened it up to find out the monitor is a WG K7203.  It was made in 2002.  The monitor looks pretty good (clean and no burn) so I am thinking that it probably does not need the kit.  I don't have any type of testing equiptment.  How can I find out if it is really the monitor or maybe the game itself.

Thanks for your help....

Swap the color inputs.  If the problem travels, it's the game.

Likely it's not the game.  It's probably the color transistor on the neckboard.  Green likes to go first  because it's nestled right between red and blue, and gets the heat from them.

Thanks!  I tried it and the monitor still did not work.  How hard and what is the easiest way to figure out which transistor it is?

Thanks for your help.....

compare the transistors with a multimeter

On a WG it's almost always the middle transistor.  RGB after all.

Thanks, after taking the protective cover off the back of the neck board, the middle transistor made the board black.  So I am trying to find a replacement C3956 transistor.  Radio Shack does not carry them and most places on-line want you to buy in quantities.  I tried Mouser electronics too and they did not have them.  Any suggestions????

Thanks for your help...

Crosses to an NTE2521.  Mouser should have that.

Longshot, but try touching up the solder joints on all the color transistors.  I had one once that came completely unsoldered.  Once I soldered it back together it worked fine.  I'd still replace the transistor but in the meantime you could still play it.

What a pain it has been to get this part.  I ended up ordering it from Wells Gardner.

Thanks for your help,

I couldn't find it either.  Mouser didn't have it.  I could have bought it from Happs or American gaming.  All three had a minimum order so I went with Wells Gardner since they are close to home.

Thanks for the help...

Touch up any and all solder joints on the board.  If you have access to a rejuvenator you can test the tube and see if the green gun is shot.  Check parts along the green circuit, see if anything isn't the way it's supposed to be.

You should see if you can locate someone with a CRT tester / rejuvinator to rule out the weak gun
