choppy game help
« on: July 01, 2008, 12:18:26 am »
Ok guys, I know this is topic keeps coming up, and I've been searching and tweaking for hours now and I'm still stumped.  No matter what I do, golden tee and mortal kombat keep playing choppy - mk always more than gt.  For GT, the sound and video is choppy at the very beginning screens, but when you start playing, everything smooths out.  When it starts playing music and switches to the next hole, the choppy returns only to smooth out while I'm swinging.  MK is just choppy all the time both video and sound.  Hardware specs are: pentium III 996mHz and 512ram.  sound card is stock from dell.  Video card is geforce 2 mx 400 with s-video out for a tv screen (but right now so I can read it clearly and troubleshoot with ease,  I use the regular monitor out to my monitor).  I run XP pro.

I'm slowly but surely wrapping my head around this emulation thing about how typically the older the mame version, the less choppy but less accurate the emulation.  The rom set I have is for .117 i think.  I've tried several different mame32 versions from 88 to the newest GUI and it seems no matter what I run, GT and MK are choppy.  Yes I have seen that as I go older with mame version, the choppyness improves, but nothing perfect yet.  I've tried changing settings in the ini for autoframeskip, waitvsynch, and synchrefresh, and I still can't get it to work right.  Unfortunately I don't quite understand all the ini settings and what they mean, but I'm learning.  I just don't know what step I should take next.  I feel like it's just a software problem.  And certainly I have good enough hardware to run these games, it's just a matter of choosing the right mame version and settings.  At least that's how I understand things so far with all my reading.  Could it be simply that it's because I'm playing them on a flat panel monitor and should test them on my tv (the normal playing conditions) instead?  Any advice would be appreciated...Thanks in advance.

Even during the "fastest" times, MKII required at LEAST a 1 GHz processor.  Your computer will simply never be able to play MK2 at all no matter what version you use.  Read this post from start to finish.  There is not a single thing you can do to get MK2 running on your system.  The game is too "powerful" to emulate on such a slow setup.  Your only option is to build a new system.

fair enough.  thanks for the help.  Is my hardware the same reason I can't smooth out golden tee too? Thanks again.

Most likely, yes.  Sorry it's not the answer you want to hear.
