EmuMovies Atari 2600 problem
« on: June 29, 2008, 08:06:12 pm »
If I watch the movies in WMP they play just fine, but if I use them in mala there is like a 5 second delay where I only hear audio. Then the video finally kicks in and looks OK part of the time and at other times it seems to have artifacts. All videos that I've tried do this (around a dozen). I've tried it both in my cab and on my desktop. Both have the xvid codec. I thought perhaps it was a problem with resizing the video, so I altered my layout to show them as 320x240, but the problem remained.

Has anyone else run into this? I'm wondering if it's a problem with my configuration or some kind of a defect with the videos themselves? If you think it's a problem with my configuration, any ideas on what to try?

Incidentally my mame videos work just fine.

I remember someone saying there is a delay value for showing videos. So I would check the MaLa config. It does seem a little strange that the audio is playing though.

It's not that... I have that set for less than a second. And again, it's working fine with mame videos.

At a guess the codec is fussy about videos, Hopefully that will be less fussy with the latest Video Driver I will have to use when I migrate this to be built on the lastest IDE.

In the meantime.....

Is there another batch of videos you you can try? Can you try to process them with a vide editor of something to see if that helps?

I assume if you re-labled one of your mame videos (as a test ) it would work OK as Atari 2600?

I'm having the exact same problem. Audio starts correctly but video is delayed 5 seconds and there are intermittent artifacts in the video (especially when the video reaches the end and loops, leaving a ghost image of the last frame of the video). I've got emumovies set up for alot of different systems and this problem seems to be present only on all atari systems and all sega systems except dreamcast. Daphne also has problems.

At first I had a 2007 version of Xvid installed and got the latest version trying to fix this problem. The problem is still present.

I had all of this working fine but yesterday I formatted my HD to start from scratch. Solved some problems but apparently created new ones like this

I'll be sure to post if I get mine working

Given that MaLa is fussy about videos at the moment.  ;).

But you might want to ask CIRCO what the difference is with encoding on Atari/Sega.  :dunno

Glad to know I'm not the only one. I planned to try the "renamed mame video" suggestion first, then contact circo second. I tend to think it's the videos too, but since they're not exactly new I had some doubt - would have thought it would have come up and been addressed.

I'll certainly post if I learn anything.

So I take it you haven't solved the problem? Have you contacted circo? If so, what did he say? I emailed him last night (haven't heard back yet).

He tells me that the torrent videos are old. They were encoded as divx, and to quote him, "mala and divx HATE each other". As a result he later converted them to xvid, but those are only available on his ftp site. Donations required for ftp access (I've donated, so I'm in luck :)).

Ah Ha glad there was a logical explanation.

Hopefully MaLa won't always be so fussy about the Codec's

I should have also mentioned that you can manually convert the videos if you don't have ftp access. Quoting circo again, "if you use virtualdub you can do a batch re encode and change them to xvid, should solve the problem".

The emumovies that I have were downloaded via the FTP a few weeks ago, so they are the "working" version. Additionally, they worked fine for me until I formatted my hard drive and started over.

I'll monkey around with different versions of Xvid this weekend to see if I can find anything

I've switched and swapped codecs and haven't had any luck fixing this.

Did using the FTP versions of the videos fix your problem? I don't think this is it since I'm having the exact same problem with the videos I got from the FTP only a couple weeks ago.

I'm drawing a blank right now... It wouldn't suck quite as bad if it hadn't been WORKING PERFECTLY before my dumb ass decided to format my hard drive and start over  :badmood:

This definately isn't a solution but...

If you go into the Xvid config menu and check "compatibility renderer" under "Output" and check "DX50" under "FourCC Support" (and no, I have no clue what that is or what it's doing), instead of the movie being black with only sounds until 5-10 seconds into the vid, it will show a still frame of the video  with sounds until 5-10 seconds and then it will start playing normally.

Each video always shows the same frame and it's not the first frame of the video, it's the frame that takes place 5-10 seconds into the video. Once the timeline of the video gets to the frame that is being shown, the video just kicks in from there. This is hard to explain.

Maybe this clue with help

Have you had any luck with this, TheShanMan?

I solved it by downloading the videos from the ftp site and deleting the torrent videos.
