My NEO-GEO Conversion
« on: June 23, 2008, 09:16:01 am »
This is my very first MAME cabinet.  I bought an old NEO-GEO cabinet with a working 25in monitor for $100US and converted it to a very simple MAME cabinet.

If you are interested I did a complete write up of my project and posted it on my personal site:
http://www.freemansgarage.com/mamecab.html

It's not as pretty as many of your guys' cabinets but it works well.

MAMEWah Front end.

The cabinet with extra buttons enstalled.

This was a fun build and I play it with my brother all the time.

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

Looks better than my cabinet.

Very nice.

Was it working?

Neo Geo cabs in working condition are better than any MAME cabinet.

Looks great! I have always like the neo geo cabinet. The only thing missing is a now featuring picture!

Yeah the NEO-GEO board works fine.  When I bought it, I tested the cabinet with a Metal Slug cartridge and it worked fine.  I removed the NEO-GEO board but I still have it.

If I were you, I'd at least have considered setting it up so you could switch between the Neo Geo PCB and the PC on the fly, rather than taking the original hardware out. It's not a great arcade sin, but at least you left the cab mostly intact otherwise.

Looks very nice! very Clean Job, you do need to change the Marquee or just add an image of something related to your emulator in my opinion, great job!

I disagree with this. I say keep it looking like a "real" machine. I think the best conversions are the ones that people couldn't pick out as MAME machines if you put the original game on there. The nice thing about doing a Neo Geo is that it could be any one of dozens of games!

Nice work!

I tried to keep the cabinet original.  The only permanent damage I did was the installation of the extra 4 HAPP buttons.  I had to drill holes...oh well.  I tried to keep the buttons multi-colored so its hard to tell. It works really well and I play it with my kids all the time.

How would a 7" LCD in the now playing marquee be driven by mame.

Is there a plugin to have Mame display the now playing game flyer to a 2nd monitor display. I think that would be a very cool add on.

I am also working on a Neo Geo to Mame cab conversion. I am keeping mine as close to original MVS as possible.

My current project thread-

Sweet conversion! I love the Neo-Geo cabinets and for $100 with a working monitor you can't beat that at all! Especially considering what those monitors go for new and used and we all know how expensive they can be!  :laugh2:
