Another Monitor, Another Problem (FIXED!)
« on: June 18, 2008, 09:53:05 pm »
Ok, so given my recent success with my Pentranic, I've been systematically fixing up all my monitors...so far so good...so I have this other 33" monitor I get around to and here's the story: got it from a guy a loooong time ago as "mostly working" with the intention of having it fixed one day then basically just forgot about it completely. Been sitting in my shed for ages colelcting dust...anyway, as I recall, the issue was a pincushion problem on the left hand side of the screen it was warped inward in a semi circle...so I'm assuming that's a pincushion issue anyways-tell me if I'm wrong of course...
anyways, I decided to pull it out and give it a go....
1st power on test....just as I recalled...pincushion effect on the left side of screen...
I replace most of the caps...but not all...still a few more I could replace...
try again...picture looks fantastic...other than still having the pincushion effect on the left side ;)
so now I'm thinking...what the hell kind of monitor is this anyways? no distinguishing marks or stickers on it whatsoever...
so I spend the better part of a day comparing photos...it's a Hantarex Polo 1....I'm pretty positive it is...looks identical to the picture only it's missing the metal shield over the one side of it....anyways...
so I have the manual and schems downloaded but as you know, I still suck royally at reading these schems so I'm kind of at a loss of where to go...
none of the adjustments on the remote help....there are 3 more on the board itself...
x-ray prot which I assume has nothing to do with this
v.lin (should I play with this one?-I'm thinking maybe I should...)
v.adj (should I play with this one?)
I'm also thinking of checking the following list of parts: let me know if I left something out, am checking something totally unrelated, etc. TIA!
c111,129,172,174,175,106,108 (basically all the ones I didn't already replace-and some of these I probably have already replaced honestly, but I'm going from my notes right this second so bare with me)
bdx53a
bu508a
d134,135,116,119
r229,219,36,167
so like I said, let me know how well I guessed please...are these good places to start looking? did I miss something obvious? am I checking something unrelated? Please let me know as I'm still learning after all. Thanks!
Also worth noting, when I finally got the chassis out where I could see the bottom, it has VERY apparently had some work done before...bottom is in VERY rough shape...let me just be clear-I am NOT responsible for this! I point this out because it looks REALLY badly done, and I don't want you guys thinking I'm making half-hearted efforts here...my pentranic looks factory! I can solder pretty well! this looks gawdawful! I will get pics up ASAP of both the top and bottom of the chassis to be sure I ID'd the monitor correctly and to see what you guys think as far as if this "work" on the bottom could be the problem...thanks for any and all help!

you should have an east/west correction board with 2 pots-keystone and pincushion

I'm not seeing that....maybe I ID'd it wrong? Will get the pics up tonight so I can know for sure! thanks grantspain!

[Edit]
Ok, here are some pics of my chassis...as far as my eye can tell it looks to match the pics both on bobroberts and jomac...but again, I'm still learning so you guys tell me...is this a hantarex polo I'm looking at?

And here are some pics of the work I mentioned earlier on the bottom...well, mostly on the bottom, there's one pic of a bad spot on the top side too...anyways...

Again, not my handiwork so don't really know anything about it other than it looks bad...

[Edit 2]
Also, found another pic of the same board here in the forums and it appears my chassis is missing the card mentioned...the one that would have those pincushion knobs on it....dunno what happened to it....never had one for it to the best of my knowledge...anyways, guess to start I am going to try to find one of those on ebay or something...

the board you are talking about is the east/west correction board-this has the pincushion and keystone adjustment pots
i am sure that the very early polo chassis did not have this board or perhaps yours has been removed-if it has been removed it would be evident due to desoldering aroung the track
i do have one of these boards if you can't find one in the U.S

also important to note that there has been some broken track so you should check continuity all around the repairs just in case they missed another broken track

thanks grantspain! as always, I greatly appreciate the clarifications! :)

Ok...so I took a close look at my board and...it appears as though it never had one(everything is perfectly clean in the area it would be in)....

but it DOES appear to have the spot for it, so I'm assuming I could just attach one...is that right?
and on the subject of that, I would definately want that one from you-just let me know how much and where to send the money(pm me if ya want to)...

so right this moment I'm going to start checking the repair areas like you reccomended, and probably revise my list of suspect parts as well, since I'll be playing with the board anyhoo, might as well start checking parts, right? ;)
anyways, will post those results soon as I can and in the meantime, guess I'm just waiting on your reply about the little card. Thanks again!

if its not related to the track breakage then the only other thing that would cause this fault are the east/west correction diodes(d134 and d135),normally they will cause a width problem as well as pincushion
if this chassis never had a e/w board then it don't need one

Ah! You once again prove yourself to be the man grantspain! Turns out d135 is on my new "naughty parts" list as bad...and that's the only component just coming up flat out bad...I'm still going to replace the remaining caps just because I've read so many times in here that it's a generally good idea on these ones...
other than that the repairs seem to be ok except for one area I deem to be sketchy, so I'll re-do that area as well just to be thorough...hopefully that will cover it...seems like it probably should...
anyhoo, will update soon as I get a chance to test...gotta finish up a naomi I'm repairing for someone first unfortunately...but I've been putting off for over a week so got to at this point...lol! ah well...will get back to the monitor probably next week and update. :)

Replaced d134 and 135 and problem went away. Then replaced remaining original caps for good measure. Everything seems fine now. :)
Thanks  again for help!

thats good news, this east/west problem seems to be reasonably common on hantarex.the polo2 seems most at risk
glad it is all working, thats another we can tick off 8)
