Still at MAME 1.04 - what am I missing?
« on: June 07, 2008, 08:02:17 pm »
I'm using MAME32v1.04 and never bothered doing a full upgrade because of all the things I've heard about MAME becoming increasingly taxing on hardware resources.  I recently downloaded MAME 1.25 just to play the CPS3 games and was wondering if there are any other notable games I'm missing out on by not upgrading.  Any stand outs?

I'm also digging the display "effects" that have been added.

Honestly, the only game that keeps a MAME newer than .99 on my computer is Bubble Bobble.  The emulation was fixed in .116.   (The girlfriend likes it, and I suppose I do too...)

I do however check out the logs to see if anything new or interesting has been added, but I'm old-school so the three older versions I run is more than fine.   I also saw some mentions about joystick mapping in recent versions.

Does Raiden II work yet? I've been waiting for it since I first started using MAME ten years ago.

Since that release the biggest advancement in my opinion was not CPS3 .. it was Buggy Boy (Speed Buggy) added in 0.122u1.  A close second for me is accurate Donkey Kong discrete sound support in 0.116.

Although this is still not 100%, correct?

The "correctness" is up to individual interpretation.  Likely what a lot of people are remembering hearing are shaped most likely by the samples they've used in MAME for so many years or sounds from one the numerous ports for classic systems.  The current implementation, as far as I'm aware, it's as accurate through emulation as one can get.  There are other issues too that might make it 'inaccurate' - such as cabinet, speaker location or amplification influences.

I grew up with the original, though am not a DK afficionado, and yet I don't remember it being quite so tubby-sounding. Do you mean it was that way?

It's really difficult at times to remember what it truly should sound like (and in some cases look like) for multiple reasons:

1.  We all typically played these games in noisy arcades or pizza parlors which aurally affect the sounds.
2.  The speakers on many machines don't always functions 100% as they should.
3.  As the hardware and the cabinets aged, the sounds and sights produced by them can change quite a bit.
4.  We're all getting older.   :P ;D
5.  The hardware we're using to replicate the sights and sounds may be quite different from that on which we originally played.
Donkey Kong High Scores:
1): 49,500
2): 35,600
3): 30,100
4): 29,400
5): 28,200

Virtua racing!

That one is unplayable yet. I only see the car floating above a crappy flickering landscape.

What was wrong with it in v0.99? I seem to recall playing this with my GF (in 0.99) and don't recall seeing anything wrong (?)

Me too. This was the last of my childhood favourites to be emulated.

I know SvC Chaos - SNK vs. Capcom has been working for a while, but I'm not sure if that's the same as Millennium Fight 2000.

Tried Virtua Racing, but it looks like I have some files missing.   :(

On to Buggy Boy!!

Honestly, I couldn't tell you.  It's probably something behind the scenes with the complex game mechanics that's slightly off.
I would never have noticed anything was wrong with the emulation it weren't for the warning that popped up.

(And by the way, I was wrong.  I'm reading it was fixed in 0.107u3.  I said .116 because that was the version I happened to download).

Here's an interesting page about why certain items appear in the game, which shows how many things on going on behind the scenes.

Thanks for the link, some interesting stuff there :)

It was actually due to an undumped MCU chip, or rather it's somewhat 'guessed' version causing various things to behave incorrectly, apparently:

See the Maws page for Bubble Bobble for a nice long explanation :)

No.  Emulation of Sega's Naomi hardware does not seem to be anywhere close in MAME.
However, those games were had arcade perfect versions in the Sega Dreamcast which has been emulated...

Nobody's mentioned the high resolution artwork!  Added in MAME 0.107

Download it from Mr. Do's MAME Artwork Project Page.

Some fantastic stuff on there.  Sea Wolf, Space Encounters, After Burner.

They finally got the sounds right in Phoenix, around 117, I believe. One of my favorite games!

Dang!  I thought that if Phoenix audio got fixed, Pleiads sound would just work.  Seems to still be broken.  Here's what it is supposed to sound like:

nice thing for me was to be able to use split screens for punchy out or any double screen game.
