Project: Pole Position MAMEd

What do you get when you cross:

with

and

??

FUN!

**********

Let me preface this thread by saying that I know full well that I am killing a cabinet... well,  sort of.  I am putting it out of it's misery more like it.  It DOES WORK.... well,  sort of.  The track graphics are corrupted and it's missing some sounds.  I've attempted to clean the chips, etc... no-go.  Basically you get this:

Couple that with the fact that Pole Position boards are known for being pains in the asses to get going and to keep going AND the most important part,  I don't like Pole Position enough to own just IT and you see where I am going...it's gotta be MAMEd.

This,  for sure,  angers the Arcade Gods...

...fortunately I built up enough good Arcade Karma this year to offset the Arcade Gods wrath (i hope).

In any case,  if you feel you gotta flame me for my decision,  FEEL FREE...I'd do the same if I were in your shoes.

Back to the regularly scheduled program...

**********

I plan on MAMEing a Pole Position.  What you see in the 2nd photo is a 4-way shifter,  the next photo is a throttle and BRAKE assembly.  Both fit the PP with little modification!  Whats even better is that I also have the necessary electronics to get `er done. (Thanks to AR for the parts!  You made it TOO easy!) Basically I need to build a MAME PC and decide if I go authentic or current.

THAT is where I am at right now... do I go with a 19" standard res monitor or do I go with a 21" VGA PC monitor?  It's a no brainer if you consider only MAME.  Go standard res.  That said,  with a wheel + break/throttle & 4 way shifter it'd be fun to play games like Need for Speed, etc...

What do you think?  Stick authentic or go current?   This decision affects what parts I buy.  If I go authentic I'll get another ArcadeVGA video card,  if I go current I'll buy a card that can push the polys...

Opinions?

Good luck, have fun. I mame'd a 1976 LeMans (in my projects) and when it was all said and done I had a nice looking cabinet but not a ton of games to play on it.

The nieces and nephews loved playing it. I have some good info in my thread on how I hacked that same wheel.

I'll be watching!

That track actually looks kinda cool. But yeah, any PP is a candidate for Mame...

I put a upright MAMEd Pole Position in a daycare facility recently.  Everytime I go there to check on the other machines, there are always 4 or 5 kids around the Pole Position.  They actually use a chair and prefer to sit down at it while playing it.  Pretty cool.
