I am going to see this tonight and I am excited. I have read a lot of reviews and they are pretty mixed. From what I am hearing this is my type of horror movie. Stalking and suspense, in the vein of the original Halloween. Not much gore and the best thing of all is

<spoiler>

there is no real motive for the killings, no bizarre plot twists or overly thought out, forced endings. Sometimes people are just psycho for the sake of being psycho! I like that.

That wasn't a spoiler.

That's my kind of movie. I hate when everything is explained. I love psychos without any motives. That's the scariest situation. I don't want to identify with the killers, I want to be scared of them!

Movies like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (the original title had "chain" and "saw" seperate), The Devil's Rejects, and Wolf Creek are my kinds of movies.

Don't tell me WHY the bogeyman IS the bogeyman. Just tell me where to hide!

I recently saw the movie "Them" which looks to be very similar to The Strangers except it got better reviews, and it has completely turned me off of wanting to see The Strangers.  It was a completely generic, by the numbers, horror movie that I might of considered good if it was the first horror movie I ever saw, but I knew exactly what was coming before it happened and with characters who were constantly making stupid decisions, it just made me not like that movie at all.  Hopefully The Strangers won't fall into the same problems, but since the storyline looks to be exactly the same and the reviews are not as good, I'm not very optimistic.

"Them" looked awful. This looks completely different. (And it's R...that seems to be rare anymore...)

You could be right, but from the previews of The Strangers it looks almost exactly the same.  I hope I'm wrong, but I'm going to wait until its a rental.

Same here on the rental thing...

I rarely spend the gas and ticket price (plus drink) to go to the movies. Indiana Jones and Iron Man were the last two I saw. I had to take out a second mortgage just to go. :P

Heh, I was just glancing through the reviews of The Strangers and I noticed this quote from a reviewer, "Though I much preferred the efficient, murderous simplicity of Them, the French original, for the uninitiated The Strangers is a nice little fright fest and perfect date fare to boot."

I guess there was a good reason the two movies looked so much alike.   :)

Maybe I had "Them" confused for something else then...since it was nothing that interested me in the first place.

Perhaps it was "They" or "Us" or "Those"

"THAT!"

Duh, you just run up to the attic or down to the basement.  No fair having more than one way out. :)
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

I don't think Them was ever released to theaters in the US (only on dvd), which is probably why you were thinking of something with a similar title.

I meant on DVD.

But this was the movie I was thinking:

No, but from the previews...they give the occupants plenty of time and taunting to know that they are coming in with bad intentions...that's why I own a gun.  But me popping some morons in the chest when they walked in my house wouldn't make for much of a movie I guess.

You own a gun because you're worried about something like the plot of this movie happening to you?  LMAO.  Ever since I saw Evil Dead 2 I have refused to not have a chainsaw in my house, or at least in my work shed.

This is another example of how people jump to paranoid conclusions when it comes to tools they feel are too dangerous.

When your hand becomes possessed a chainsaw may be the only thing that can save you.

Well, I don't own a gun because of this movie...but I've lived in not so nice areas before.   I actually walked by a group of people after some one pulled out a gun and started shooting.  I hadn't heard anything really loud, because the punk used a .22...I thought it was firecrackers!  I figured it out when the dude's friend started yelling at him to toss the gun...then I hurried into my apartment and grabbed my 9...half wanting one of them to walk in.

I finally got to see this movie and while it had its flaws I definitely liked it, a lot! It is true that this movie is predictable, but that didn't stop me from having a tension stomach ache from beginning to end. The use of silence, limited dialogue and soundtrack were definitely effective. I would give the movie an 8 out of 10. I will say that the ending is a little disturbing and hard to watch so be careful who you take to see this movie (ie. your squeamish girlfriend/wife that you have to sleep with that night). Also for people that get motion sickness easily, the camera work is very shaky.

If you are a horror movie fan then this is a must see, along with "The descent" if you haven't seen that yet. If you are not into horror movies then why the hell are you reading this thread  ;D

Glad to hear they use silence properly. Not enough movies do it right.

As for "The Descent", that's a great one. It's a good daytime movie, because I don't recommend walking through a dark house after watching late at night!

They should make a movie about driving around Las Vegas in a small car.

That will scare you silly.

The Descent is "a must see" ... on DVD where you can fast forward through all the blah blah blahs.  A group of women on a female bonding trip finding their inner strengths, It’s "Sex in the City" in a hole(where it belongs).

I'm assuming this means "The Strangers" is also a must see ... on DVD.
