I noticed the 80's are starting to be mined for material... My kid was watching some crap on Disney Channel the other day.
They had one kid with punk rocker hair, and another New Wave looking kid with a skinny tie and sport coat singing Kids Of The Future.
It was just a slightly mangled version of Kim Wilde "Kids In America".

You have no idea.  There are 6 or 7 movies currently in the works which will either be remakes or sequals of classic 80's movies.  Off the top of my head I remember them saying Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure, Short Circuit, and Beverly Hills Cop, but I know there are several more that I'm forgetting.

The Disney Channel has been 'mining' the 80s for material non-stop since the 1980s. 

 

Didn't realize that, but haven't really been exposed to the whole kid scene until a couple years ago.
Hadn't really heard a direct lift of an 80's tune redone until that Kids In America ripoff.

I understand that, my comments are kind of out of context there... PBJim said Disney Channel had been ripping off 80's music since the 80's. I thought it was a new phenomenon. That Devo thing is new, basically what I've been noticing.

Brett Ratner, the director of the new Beverly Hills Cop movie, has confirmed that he is going to make an absolute piece of garbage, as if there was any doubt.

"When asked what is biggest challenge would be, Ratner seemed to indicate that his new film would be geared towards a very PG audience. “10-year-old kids, 12-year-old kids don’t really know the old ‘Beverly Hills Cop.’ So it’s an opportunity to make it new for kids,” Ratner said."

Keep in mind that all three of the originals were rated R.

Jerry and Mark, at the end of the day, are businessmen. As non-conformist and original as they were when they started (great video find by the way - I had never seen that!) they are now in the late 50's (at least), and run companies (http://www.mutato.com), and have families.

They realize that the Devo name is still worth a few bux to the children of the 80s who now have kids of their own. They have mellowed a bit and don't seem to be opposed to profiting as much as they can, while they still can. And I can't say I entirely disagree with that.

I have had the opportunity to work with and hang out with both Jerry and Mark many years ago, and they seemed to enjoy and laugh at getting paid by large corporations for their "subversive" art. They enjoyed that paradox and haven't shied away from taking home a paycheck for their work. I suppose as they are looking towards retirement, and providing a financial nest egg for their families, they must have thought "why not?"
