ctrlr help
« on: May 25, 2008, 12:25:39 pm »
I am trying to set up the ctrlr file to work with neogeo games.  I am using fastmame .84.  I have three files default.ini, mouse.ini and neogeo.ini.  All of which are set to the commands I want to have.  I have set "ctrlr      default" in the fastmame.ini.  In Mamewah I launch the command line with  -ctrlr default option.  I delete everything in the cfg directory and start mame and it always goes to the Mame defaults instead of using the ctrlr files.  Anyone have any ideas on what I am missing???

If you have set your ctrlr file in mame.ini then you don't need to set it in your commandline options.

If you have the following in mame.ini

Code: [Select]
ctrlr      default
Then you should have a ctrlr file called default.cfg inside Mame's ctrlr folder (ie. ctrlr\default.cfg)

cfg\default.cfg is not a ctrlr file, so I think that's where your getting confused.

I understand the difference between the two.  I am using the older style of ctrlr file.  So do you have to rename the .ini files to a .cfg??

ok I got the ctrlr file to work (i didn't have it in a directory). But now I have a bigger problem.  I have a GP-wiz and my ctrlr file works up to button6 after that nothing seems to read and has n/a beside it in the Mame menu.  Not sure of this one.  I can setup all my other buttons manually in mame.

GP-Wiz acts like a joystick doesn't it? Perhaps you need to add "joystick 1" to your mame.ini file?

I have got that, I just don't understand.  It read and sets my directions and buttons for player 1 up to button 6 after that (because I have  p1start set as button7) it does nothing.  I have decided to upgrade mame to a version that works with the newer config files.  So hopefully that works.  Maybe it had something to do with my GP-wiz is set a joystick3 and mame not liking higher buttons numbers, but then why would I be able to set it up manually???  so...I guess I'm off to rebuild my romset.

Alright I tried a different version with the newer ctrlr structure and every time I tried to start Mame with the ctrlr file it wouldn't start.  When I removed the option for the ctrlr file it worked fine.  So basically my question is: has anyone with a gamepad interface gotten these ctrlr files to work properly???

These ctrlr file seem so simple and great to use....if only I could get them to work.
Time to try some more testing.....yay!!!

Ya I have seen that and have been over it quite a few times trying to get things to work.  The only thing I can think of is Mame not liking higher joystick buttons when is comes to ctrlr files(I can't for the life of me explain why or the reasoning behind this or oversight).  I'm thinking the only way to do this properly is just to reassign the buttons as I play the games, which kinda sucks but it is my only solution for now.
