Hi,

I thought the look of mala could use a face lift.

Icons and Splashscreen.

Anyone interested in submitting new versions of these?

I can't do Graphics

I think I'll take a conceptual crack at it...

BTW Loadman, I never got to say CONGRATS!! And Good Luck!

I used what I assume the name is based on: Mala beads..

The word Mala itself is a very eastern word and it rolls off the tongue as such, so I also tried to really take advantage of the ethereal quality of it..

I might regret this later today (I've been up all night and I started this concept at about 3am)... but I'll put up tonight's concept exercise.

I know you didn't ask for a new logo, but it just came to me.

Thanks for your Quick contribuition. I always thought that MaLa was Just a break down of Mame Launcher, but there could well be something deeper behind it's name.

In any case ...

Yeah A new Logo would be cool

I like your direction if you could blend it to a bit more 80's Retro style much like your Pixel assult. Possibly more blocky with the dots looking more like buttons.

I have no idea what I'm asking really

but I love your work

I was so busy seeing the word itself that I didn't see the OBVIOUS..

IMHO The graphic is nice and fresh but it does not quite lend itself to what MaLa is just yet.

If you get time I hope you could blend it to be a bit more Arcade like?

What I really I need is.
1) Spalshscreen of same size with a place/way to put a second title on the splash screen for the other MaLa utilities (have a look at MaLa Tree and the Gamelist editor)
2) New Icons
3) A new Webpage Banner
4) A scalled down version for a Forum Signature

Hey loadman I was playing around with a few logo designs for MaLa today going for something like Organic Jerks Pixel Assult logo. I also took some inspiration from Mame's logo too. I think it looks more acadey than the original MaLa logo.

Organic Jerk could probably make this look better and I doubt he would want to have a design so similar to his one, but thought I'd throw it out there to see what you think.

I like #2 and will use that for now.

Ideally it would have soome extra room at the botton for me to overlay the version details and be the same aspect ratio as the original spash as MaLa is also used on Low Rez arcade monitors.

Organic Jerk did PM me earlier and said he will work on it some more when he has time for all that bits an peices I need (Icons, Spalsh Screens, Website Headers etc). Maybe he will get some direction for your fine contribution?

I just e-mailed you a 'special' version of the MaLa layout editor using your graphic in the splash screen

Here is another design with some smoother edges. Not sure which one I like better, what do you think?

Also attached is a splash screen design. I think you should see what Organic Jerk thinks before including them in an official release. He might not be happy that it's using his color scheme and background.

I've sent you off the psd's of the originals so you can play with them in Photoshop.

I'm a bit inclined to go with flat edges as that looks more blocky like 80's video games

And the holes in the A's look a bit like the scanning eye on the robots on BEZERK... to me anyway

He said he is very keen and will do it when he has time.

I see no problem at all you making bits and pieces as lomg as you don't mind if he uses and changes you ideas later or I choose his later work over some of yours?

Is that cool. I like the change. Swindus probably hates it

Please don't be offended as I love your work and really don't like to old MaLa Icon..

But to me it looks too much like the 'M' in Mame, it's not distinguished as a MaLa Icon?

Just my view anyway as a first impression...

Is there any way you can MaLa-rise it a bit?

IMHO I think it looks different enough, but it's not associated with MaLa because it's nothing like the original logo. Attached is the "M" from the Mame logo. I don't think it looks that much alike but I guess it does a bit. Maybe we should wait and see what Organic Jerk makes of all this as I think he will be able to improve on it.

There is an actual .ico file attached to the last thread if you want to take a look at the actual icon. The main issue I have is when I paste the icon from Photoshop into an icon editor it doesn't keep the alpha channel which makes the horrible black edge around it. I made it black because it looks even worse with fading into white then placed on a black background. I did find a really nice (and free) icon editor called IcoFX though.

Whoah... alot has been happening!

Have we decided on a theme yet? Often with a project like this the art will end up going in a million different directions (and lack coherence) without a direction for the art.

Loadman, is there a particular game or type of game style that you would like to emulate? A piece of software that has the type of design you like?

Although it's of no consequence, I still think the whole japa mala thing could be cool if integrated with a more arcade look...

the only thing i would modify to this is having the "M" in MaLa a few of the pixels i would turn them yellow.. to make it look like puckman is chompin' his way to a new Layout design ;-)

I like it all.

THe Packman could make a nice Icon.

The Clean look might work well as a Webpage background/ Helppage if faded a bit more.

Just my opinion.

I would really like someone else like Organic to volunteer to own this mini Project taking submissions/ideas from all so we can get a art package together.

NO not really, just 80's style clear and simple.

ANyway, There is no rule to say we have to stick with the final submission. We can evolve it if required with future releases if we feel the first batch din't hit the mark..

just goofin' around in pshop at work for a couple minutes before I had to leave here but its an idea to base an icon off of.. I just did it real quick but it could be build upon.. kind of a cool little joystick guy... I have this as a 1600x1600 300dpi psd image if anyone wants it.. but i got to go for the day.. ill be back later this afternoon..
